A new tourism campaign in Lewis

English Beurla

[Innes Munro – Anchor] Thousands of tourists visit the north end of Lewis each year to look at the The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse. The Galson Trust, who have the estate, are now seeking ways to keep them in the area a bit longer. As such, they are preparing a website which tells tourists about the sights, the facilities and the eating places that the north end of Lewis has to offer. Eilidh MacLeod reports.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] The Galson Estate goes from Upper Barvas up to the north end of Lewis and the community trust have decided to develop the collection of information about every facility, rarity and attractive place for tourists and people of the island who come.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] One of the most attractive places for tourists in the north end of Lewis, the Butt of Lewis is in the upper most north end of the island and where the famous lighthouse is. The trust estimate there is about 70,000 people come here each year. That’s really good, they say but they want them to stay a wee bit longer in the area.

[Shona MacMillan – Galson Estate Trust] We have made lists of the places where you can stay, places where you can eat, places where you can go to the shop and things you can buy and a wee bit of history has been done on the area too and all of that will be available on this new website and it’s a community job, we got a lot of information from the community.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Amongst those groups, The Ness Historical Society, newly refurbished, where you can get food and historical knowledge, without mentioning the thing that is really enjoyed by visitors, it seems, a place where the Gaelic community, old and young, is still strong and it’s the youth who are spreading the message about tourism.

[Donna Dorris – Ness Historical Society] We made a short video with the children of the area about what can be seen and done in the north end of Lewis area and that video is ten minutes long and it is going to be played in our museum on screen for tourists and the video is in Gaelic and there will also be subtitles in English for for everyone who comes in to the Historical Society so they know what marvellous facilities are in the area and to encourage them to come back.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] There is a new campaign which encourages people to come to the island throughout the winter. They will still receive a warm welcome despite what sort of weather there is.

[Shona MacMillan – Galson Estate Trust] Definitely, we want to attract the same people to come at any time of the year. You could come in the summer and you would expect there would be sun, sunny spells and there would be a dry spell in the week you come, but there is a number of things to see which are beautiful in any weather.

[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Eilidh MacLeod, BBC An Là, the north end of Lewis.
