Buaidh a th' aig iolairean mara air stoc

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Iain MacIlleathain - Preseantair] Nise, tha Aonadh nan Tuathanach air dragh a thogail mun bhuaidh a th' aig iolairean mara air stoc air a' Ghàidhealtachd. Chaidh na draghan a th' air daoine a chur an cèill aig coinneamh anns an Òban. Tha draghan dhe leithid air a bhith ann a-nis insert airson greis. Tha buidhnean glèidhteachais airson 's gum bi na h-iolairean rim faicinn air feadh Alba. Seo Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn.

[Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Chan eil teagamh ann nach e beathaichean eireachdail a th’ ann an iolairean-mara. Ach bhon a chaidh an toirt air ais ann an Alba ann an naoi-ceud deug trì fichead ‘s a còig-deug, tha connspaid air a bhith nan cois a thaobh na buaidh a th’ ac, no nach eil aca aig tuathanaich. Tha Aonadh huathanaich Nàiseanta na h-Alba ag iarraidh barrachd deasbaid mu na h-uain a tha iad a’ call air an sgàth.

[Raibeart Dòmhnallach] Nuair a thàinig iad a-staigh an toiseach, ‘s dòcha nach robh ach trì no ceithir paidhrichean air an taobh siar. Nise, tha iad ag ràdh gu bheil suas ri ceithir fichead iolaire-mara sìos air an taobh siar. Feumaidh iadsan tuilleadh a bharrachd bìdh. Agus ‘s e caoraich is uain an aon rud a th’ ann dhaibh airson ithe. ‘S iomadh uan a tha iad air ithe oirnn. Nise, tha iad an toiseach air falbh le uain nas làidire, fhios ‘ad, bidh iad ag ithe nan òthaisgean cuideachd. Tha e air tighinn gu ìre ‘s gu feum iad rudeigin a dhèanamh mu dheidhinn nan iolairean-mara.

[Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Chaidh an cuspair a thogail aig coinneamh de chroitearan san Òban. Ach, chan eil buidhnean, an-sàs ann a bhith a’ sgaoileadh nan iolairean-mara idir a’ gabhail ris an seo.

[Seumas Reynolds] There can be little doubt that sea eagles can and have in the past taken lambs, but two very comprehensive studies have shown us that the numbers that they take are minimal. That doesn’t mean that it’s any less distressing for the farmers when that happens. But there has to be room in our wider countryside for nature and for wildlife as well as farming. Farming is constantly been told that it must diversify. This is another source of income for the countryside community.

[Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Tha buidhnean poblach misneachail mu iolairean-mara a’ neadachadh air taobh sear na h-Alba. Ach, tha beàrn mhòr ann eadar iad fhèin agus tuathanaich.

[Raibeart Dòmhnallach] Chan eil iadsan a-mach ‘s chan eil iad a’ faicinn a’ chall a tha na h-iolairean a’ dèanamh. Agus chan eil daoine a’ cur dhiubh na caoraich, na caoraich bhàine gun adhbhar agus nuair a chì thu daoine a’ dèanamh sin, tha sin ag innse dhut cho dona ‘s a tha an gnothach.

[Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Thèid an cuspair a thogail a-rithist aig coinneamh Aonadh Tuathanaich Nàiseanta na h-Alba san Eilean Sgitheanach an ath sheachdain. Ach, chan eil mòran aonta ann eadar gach taobh aig an ìre sa. Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn, BBC An Là, Baile nan Granndach.

The effect of sea-eagles on stock

English Beurla

[Iain MacLean - Presenter] Now, the Farmers’ Union have raised a concern about the effect that sea eagles have on the Highlands. Peoples’ concerns were raised officially at a meeting in Oban. Concerns like this have been around for a while. A conservation group want the eagles to be seen all over Scotland. Here’s Coinneach Smith.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] There is no doubt that sea eagles are beautiful creatures. But since they were introduced in Scotland in 1975, there has been controversy about the effect that they have, or they don’t have. The National Farmers’ Union in Scotland want more debate about the lambs that they have lost.

[Robert MacDonald] When they came in first, maybe there was only three or four pairs on the west coast. Now, they say that there are 80 sea-eagles down the west side. They need a lot more food. And it’s sheep and lambs that there is to eat. They have eaten many of our lambs. Now, they are starting on stronger lambs, they are eating the older lambs. It’s getting to the stage that something has to be done about the sea-eagles.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] The topic was raised at a crofters’ meeting in Oban. But, the group who are involved in releasing the sea-eagles do not agree with this at all.

[James Reynolds] There can be little doubt that sea eagles can and have in the past taken lambs, but two very comprehensive studies have shown us that the numbers that they take are minimal. That doesn’t mean that it’s any less distressing for the farmers when that happens. But there has to be room in our wider countryside for nature and for wildlife as well as farming. Farming is constantly been told that it must diversify. This is another source of income for the countryside community.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] The public group are confident about the sea-eagles nesting on the east coast of Scotland. But, there is a big gap between themselves and farmers.

[Robert MacDonald] They are not out and they don’t see the loss that the eagles are making. And the people are not sticking with sheep, the milking sheep with no reason and when you see people doing that, that tells you how bad the thing is.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] The subject will be raised at a National Farmers’ Union meeting in Skye, the next week. But, there is not much agreement between each side at this stage. Coinneach Smith, BBC An Là, Grantown.
