80 bliadhna on a chaidh a' chiad dealbh dhe Nessie a thogail

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Innes Rothach - Preseantair] Tha ceithir fichead bliadhna ann an-diugh on a thog fear de mhuinntir an àite a’ chiad dhealbh a-riamh de dh’Uilebheist Loch Nis. B’ ann air an darna deug den t-Samhain naoi ceud deug is trì deug air fhichead a chunnaic Ùisdean Gray rudeigin air uachdar an Loch. Thachair gun robh camara aige agus chaidh Nessie air film airson a’ chiad uair. Tha Dòmhnall Moireasdan ag aithris.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Tha i a’ cur nam mìltean notaichean gach bliadhna ri eaconamaidh na Gàidhealtachd ann an turasachd. ‘S dòcha nach eil càil cho ainmeil rithe mun Ghàidhealtachd air feadh an t-Saoghail. Bha bruidhinn oirre a’ dol air ais gu àm Choilm Chille, ach b’ ann bho chionn ceithir fichead bliadhna an-diugh fhèin a thog fear de mhuinntir an àite a’ chiad dhealbh dhith.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] ‘S ann timcheall air an dearbh spot-sa aig Foithir a chunnaic Ùisdean Gray an uilebheist am feasgar Sàbaid a bha siud, dìreach far a bheil Abhainn Foithir a’ tighinn a-steach do Loch Nis. Thuirt e gum fac e am beathach ‘s e air cuairt a ghabhail an-dèidh na searmoin. Bha camara aige agus thog e dealbh.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Tha cuid a’ smaoineachadh gur e a th’ ann le maide mòr na bheul. Nochd an dealbh anns an Daily Record làithean às dèidh a thogail. Ach bha an uair sin is tha fhathast cuid an amharas gun deach an dealbh atharrachadh beagan.

[Calum Aonghas MacAoidh] Maighstir Gray a bha seo, saoilidh mi gur e esan ‘s dòcha as ainmeil a thaobh an deilbh a thog e neo an dealbh a chruthaich e agus tha mi a’ creidsinn gur e sin an teagamh, ‘s dòcha mar dhealbhadair, sin an teagamh a th’ ormsa. An e dealbh a chaidh a thogail glan air an sin fhèin a th’ ann neo an e dealbh a chaidh a thogail glan a th’ ann agus gun deach rudeigin eile a chur ris as-dèidh làimh?

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] ‘S iomadh dealbh a nochd bhon uair sin, leithid an fhir ainmeil-sa an ath bhliadhna a-rithist. Ach chaidh a dhèanamh a-mach gu math luath gur e foill a dh'aona-ghnothaich a bha sa leithid. ‘S dòcha nach eil dealbh Gray buileach fuadain, ach tha e furasta rudan fhaicinn air Loch Nis, dealbh a thogail agus cluich leis. Agus fiù leis an teicneòlas bho chionn ceithir fichead bliadhna, ghabhadh sin a dhèanamh.

[Calum Aonghas MacAoidh] Bha e meadhanach furasta dhol a-steach dhan an dorchadas, dhan an darkroom, agus obrachadh le ink agus peann air neo bruis gu math mìn agus rud sam bith a bhiodh anns an dealbh a thoirt às. Bha e gu math furasta salchar a thogail bho dealbh air neo nam biodh an duine, i neo e, beagan nas clever mu dheidhinn cùisean. Dh’fhaodadh iad rudeigin a chur ris an dealbh cuideachd.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Air feasgar brèagha foghair, tha loch air leth àlainn, ach cha bhi e fhathast a’ tarraing nam milleanan bho air feadh an t-saoghail, mur a biodh an ùpraid a chruthaich an dealbh aig Ùisdean Gray agus is an t-seagh sin is coma tha anns an dealbh. Dòmhnall Moireasdan, BBC An Là, Loch Nis.

80 years since the first picture of Nessie was taken

English Beurla

[Innes Munro - Presenter] It is eighty years ago from today since one of the area’s residents took the first ever picture of the Loch Ness Monster. It was on the 12th of November 1933 since Hugh Gray so something on top of the Loch. He just happened to have a camera and Nessie went on film for the first time. As Donald Morrison reports.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] She adds millions of pounds every year to the Highland economy in tourism. Maybe there’s nothing as famous as her about the Highlands all over the world. She has been discussed since St. Columba’s time, but it was eighty years ago today that one of the area’s residents took the first picture of her.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] It was around this spot at Foyers that Hugh Gray saw the monster on that afternoon of the Sabbath, just where the River Foyers meets Loch Ness. He said that he saw the beast as he was taking a trip after the sermon. He had a camera and he took a picture.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] Many think that it is a dog with a big stick in his mouth. The picture appeared in the Daily Record days after it was taken. But after that and now are concerned that the picture has been altered slightly.

[Calum Angus MacKay] This Mr Gray, I think that he is maybe most famous due to the image that he took or the picture he created and I believe that is the doubt, maybe as a photographer, that is my doubt. Is it a picture that was taken just on that day, or is it a picture that was taken on that day and something has been added afterwards?

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] Many pictures have been published since that time, like this famous one the next year. But it was proven quickly that this was a hoax. Maybe Gray’s picture isn’t a true fake, but it is easy to see things on Loch Ness, to take a picture and play with it. And even with the technology of eighty years ago, it could be done.

[Calum Angus MacKay] It was awful easy to go into the darkness, in the darkroom, and working with ink and a pen or with a brush which is very fine and anything that is in the image can be taken out. It is very easy to pick up dirt from the picture, or if someone was clever about things, they could add something to the image.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] On the brought autumn afternoon, the loch is very beautiful, but it would not be attracting the millions from all over the world, if there was no uproar created by the picture Hugh Gray took and in that sense, who cares what is in the picture. Donald Morrison, BBC An Là, Loch Ness.
