Fàsach Phatagonia

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Dòmhnall] Fìor cheann a deas ceann a deas Ameireagaidh.

[Dòmhnall] Tìr ghaothmhor, mhòr, fhalamh Phatagonia.

[Dòmhnall] Leth-mhillean mìle ceàrnagach de dh’fhearann còmhnard, rèidh. Cladach a’ lùbadh an achlais na mara agus closaichean aonaranach shoithichean.

[Dòmhnall] ’S e fàsach a tha seo. Chan e fàsach gainmhich ach fàsach fhrasach ’s fìor treasach

[Dòmhnall] Tha e falamh, mur a biodh na caoraich agus an fheadhainn a tha a’ dèanamh am beòshlaint asta.

[Dòmhnall] Às gach àite dhan deach na h-eilthirich Ghàidhealach ’s e seo ’s dòcha an t-àite a bu mhì-choltaiche gu lèir.

[Dòmhnall] Bha iomadh Gàidheal òg a chuir a chuid a b’ fheàrr dhe bheatha seachad air tuathan mòra caorach Phatagonia. Bha feadhainn bliadhnaichean ann mus do thill iad dhachaigh a-rithist, ach thug gu leòr eile am beatha an seo ’s tha an teaghlaichean fhathast ag obrachadh nan estancias aig deireadh an t-saoghail.

Chaidh am prògram seo, Na h-Eilthirich, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 1999.

The wilderness of Patagonia

English Beurla

[Donald] The far south of south America.

[Donald] The windy, vast, empty land of Patagonia.

[Donald] Five hundred thousand square miles of level plains. A shore meandering oxter the sea and lonely ship wrecks.

[Donald] This is a wilderness. Not a sandy desert but a copious and truly tertiary wilderness.

[Donald] It is empty, if it was not for the sheep and those who make their living from them.

[Donald] Of every place that the Highland emigrants went this is perhaps the most unlikely place of all.

[Donald] There were many young Gaels who spent most of their life on Patagonia's great sheep farms. Some spent years there before returning home again, but plenty stayed here and their families still work the estancias at the end of the world.

This programme, Na h-Eilthirich, was first broadcast in 1999.
