Droch naidheachd

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Preseantair] Bha an droch naidheachd a’ ruiginn teaghlach às dèidh teaghlaich. Bha còrr ’s dà cheud duine cloinne air am fàgail às aonais athar.

[Mòr NicLeòid] Tha cuimhne agam ban-nàbaidh a’ tighinn a-steach agus bha an t-aodach a bh’ aig mo mhàthair air ullachadh a chuireadh m’ athair air nuair a thigeadh e, bha e air frèam air beulaibh an teine gus am biodh e blàth, tioram ga chur air nuair a ruigeadh e an taigh. Ach nuair a thàinig an naidheachd a bha seo thàinig am boireannach sin a-steach agus sgioblaich i an t-aodach sin gu lèir agus dh’fhalbh i leis a-mach à sealladh do rùm eile. Agus tha cuimhne agam glè mhath air an sin.

[Mòr NicLeòid] Chaidh an case aige a lorg agus bha gnothaichean ann a bha e a’ toirt dhachaigh thugainn a cheannaich e ann an Gibraltar air a shlighe dhachaigh agus bha na rudan sin sàbhailte agus an case sàbhailte agus chaidh a thoirt dhuinn mar a chaidh a lorg air a’ chladach.

[Mòr NicLeòid] Bha buaidh mhòr, mhòr aige air Leòdhas. Bha e mar gum biodh neart an Eilein air a thoirt air falbh ann an aon oidhche. Cha robh e furasta idir ach bha iomadh dachaigh eile a bha san aon suidheachadh anns an sgìre agus anns an eilean gu lèir agus anns na Hearadh cuideachd.

Chaidh am prògram seo, Iolaire, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2009.

Bad news

English Beurla

[Presenter] The bad news reached family after family. More than two hundred children were left without a father.

[Marion MacLeod] I remember a female neighbour coming in and the clothes that my mother had prepared for my father to put on when he would arrive, it was on a frame in front of the fire so that it would be warm, dry when he put it on once he reached the house. But when this news came that woman came in and she tidied all those clothes and she took them out of sight to another room. And I remember that very well.

[Marion MacLeod] His case was found and there were things in it that he was taking home to us that he bought in Gibraltar on his way home and these things were safe and the case was safe and it was given to us as it was found on the shore.

[Marion MacLeod] It had a huge impact on Lewis. It was as if the island’s strength was taken away in one night. It wasn’t easy at all but many other homes were in the same situation in the area and in the entire island and in Harris too.

This programme, Iolaire, was first broadcast in 2009.
