Gaisgeach an Iolaire

[Iain Murchadh MacLeòid] Nan deigheadh tu a dh’fhaighneachd dha fhèin ciamar a fhuair e air tìr chanadh e riut “Thurchair dhòmhsa sin, gun d’ rinn mi an rud ceart aig an àm cheart.” Sin an còmhradh aige fhèin. “Rinn mi an rud ceart aig an àm cheart.” Cha b’ e càil ach gun thurchair gun do dh’obraich e a-mach dha. Ach an dèidh sin a ràdh saoilidh mise gun robh rud no dhà na adhbhar agus ’s e sin an t-eòlas a bh’ aige air obair na mara a thaobh nan cliathan agus na bha ann. Mar a bha mi a’ cantainn ribh chan eil àite, chan eil àite anns an eilean as fheàrr a chuireas tu eòlas air dol-a-mach na fairge na thall againne ann an Nis. Ach ged a bhiodh an duine a b’ fheàrr air an t-saoghal a’ snàmh cha b’ e an snàmh a shàbhaladh e. Ach ’s e gun do chùm e fhèin air uachdar ’s gun do leig e dhan mhuir dèanamh na rudan nach urrainn dha fhèin a dhèanamh. Sin an rud. Sin an rud a chanas esan mu dheidhinn. ‘S gun adhbhrachadh gun d’ rinn e an rud ceart aig an àm cheart.

Chaidh am prògram seo, Iolaire, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2009.

Hero of the Iolaire

English Beurla

[Presenter] A great deal of those who survived from the Iolaire were saved because of Iain Mhurdo’s rope. But despite what he did he never saw himself as a hero.

[John Murdo MacLeod] If you went to ask him himself how he got to land he would say to you “What happened to me was that I did the right thing at the right time.” That’s what he said. “I did the right thing at the right time.” It was only that it worked out for him. But after saying that I think that one or two things were a factor and that’s his working knowledge of the sea, with regards to what was in his heart and in himself. As I said to you there is no place, there is no place in the island better for gaining knowledge of the sea’s behaviour than over with us in Ness. But even if the best man in the world was swimming it wasn’t the swimming that saved him. But that he kept on the surface and he allowed the sea to do the things he himself couldn’t do. That’s the thing. That’s the thing he says about it. The reason was that he did the right thing at the right time.

This programme, Iolaire, was first broadcast in 2009.
