Dleastanas a choileanadh

[Angela NicIlleathain] Nuair a thòisich an cogadh ann an naoi ceud deug agus ceithir deug, chaidh fir na dùthcha a ghairm airson seirbheis a thoirt seachad. Ann an Leòdhas a-mhàin bha na mìltean mar-thà air an treànadh anns a’ mhailisidh no nan seòladairean cùl-earalais sa Chabhlach Rìoghail, an RNR. Bha aig na fir a-nis leis an dleastanas a bh’ orra bho bhith nam buill anns na buidhnean sin a choileanadh.

[Anna NicSuain] Cha robh tòrr airgid aca tighinn a-steach, de dh’airgead fhèin mar gum biodh. Agus mar sin bha tòrr aca dha na fir a’ dol dhan mhailisidh agus a’ dol dhan RNR no an RNVR son bha iad a’ faighinn beagan airgid. Agus ann an dòigh bha sin a’ ciallachadh air a thàinig an cogadh gun robh iad dìreach air an glacadh anns an t-suidheachadh.

[Angela NicIlleathain] Chruinnich sluagh mòr air a’ chidhe ann an seo ann an Steòrnabhagh ’s iad a’ guidhe soraidh slàn dha na fir. Thàinig na fireannaich às gach ceàrnaidh dhan eilean, às Ùig, bho taobh siar, An Rubha, Tolastadh bho Thuath. Thòisich feadhainn ann an seo. Thàinig cuid eile air gige. Fiù ’s nach tàinig bàta làn fhireannach à Nis. Às an seo rinn iad air tìr-mòr, far an robh tuilleadh òrduighean a' feitheamh orra.

Chaidh am prògram seo, HMS Timbertown, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2014.

Fulfilling an obligation

[Angela MacLean] When the war started in nineteen (hundred and) fourteen, the men of the country were called to give service. In Lewis alone thousands were already trained in the militia or were reserve sailors in the Royal Navy, the RNR. The men now had to fulfill their obligation as members of these forces

[Annie MacSween] They did not have lots of money coming in, actual money as it were. And therefore lots of them, of the men, went to the militia and to the RNR or the RNVR for they got a little money. And in a way that meant when the war came that they were just caught in the situation.

[Angela MacLean] A large crowd gathered on the pier here in Stornoway and bid farewell to the men. The men came from every part of the island, from Uig, from the west side, Point, North Tolsta. Some started here. Some others came on carriage. There was even a boat full of men from Ness. From here they went to the mainland, where further orders awaited them.

This programme, HMS Timbertown, was first broadcast in 2014.
