Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh
[Preasantair] ’S iomadh cuspair air an do rinn Sìleas Na Ceapaich dàin. Eadar poilitigs na h-ama, cùisean spioradail agus òrain aotrom. Rinn i Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh mar marbhrann a’ cuimhneachadh fear de phrìomh cheannardan nan Dòmhnallach, Alasdair Dubh Ghleanna Garradh.
[Alison Ghrannd] Uill ’s mise Alison Ghrannd. ’S e Alison Dyke a bh’ orm mus do phòs mi agus tha mi air a bhith a’ fuireach anns an sgìre seo airson còig bliadhna a-nis. Thug mi còrr is deich bliadhna a’ teagaisg na Gàidhlig do luchd-ionnsachaidh aig an oilthigh ann an Obar Dheathain agus tha mi a-nis trang a’ coimhead às dèidh Màiri, an nighean bheag agam.
[Alison Ghrannd] Thàinig bàrdachd Sìleas Na Ceapaich gu m’ aire an toiseach tron chlàr aig Raonaid Walker. ’S ann an uair sin a ghabh mi ùidh anns an òran Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh oir tha sin a’ nochdadh air a’ chlàr aice agus bha dìreach rudeigin gu math àraidh mu dheidhinn. Bha rud car drùidheil mu dheidhinn a ghlac m’ aire.
[Preasantair] Rugadh Sìleas Na Ceapaich, Sìleas nighean MhicRaghnaill, ann am Both Chunndainn ann an sgìre na Ceapaich. Bhuineadh i do Dhòmhnallaich na Ceapaich agus bha i gu mòr air taobh nan Seumasach. Bha buaidh mhòr aig an seo air an t-sealladh a bh’ aice air an t-saoghal agus air a cuid bàrdachd.
[Anna Frater] Nuair a rinn Sìleas Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh bha Clann Dhòmhnaill ann an staidrudeigin cugallach agus a-nis bha i a’ faicinn Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh, aon de na ceannardan eile do Chlann Dhòmhnaill a’ bàsachadh agus bha i anns an òran aice a’ caoidh na cinn-chinnidh a bha Clann Dhòmhnaill air call anns na beagan bhliadhnaichean a bha ron sin. Ach cuideachd tha i a’ dèanamh dàn-molaidh dha Alasdair fhèin.
[Alison Ghrannd] Tha uiread de mholadh anns an òran. Uaireannan chan eil ann ach liosta fada de mholaidhean. Tha mi a’ creidsinn gu bheil ceithir sreathan deug uile às dèidh a chèile de mholadh. Tha iad uile a’ tòiseachadh le “bu tu”.
Chaidh am prògram seo, Sheinn am Bàrd, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2009.
Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh (Alasdair from Glengarry)
[Presenter] There is many a subject on which Sìleas Na Ceapaich wrote poems. Between politics of the time, spiritual matters and lighthearted songs. She wrote Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh (Alasdair from Glengarry) as an elegy remembering one of the main Macdonald leaders, Glengarry’s Black Alasdair.
[Alison Grant] Well my name is Alison Grant. I was Alison Dyke before I married and I have been living in this area for five years now. I spent more than ten years teaching Gaelic to learners at university in Aberdeen and I am now busy looking after Màiri, my wee girl.
[Alison Grant] Sìleas Na Ceapaich’s bardachd came to my attention at first through Rachel Walker’s album. It was then that I became interested in Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh (Alasdair from Glengarry) as that appears on her album and there is just something so unusual about it. There is something penetrating about it that caught my attention.
[Presenter] Sìleas Na Ceapaich, Sìleas daughter of the son of Ronald, was born in Bohuntin in the area of Keppoch. She was related to the Keppoch Macdonalds and she strongly supported the Jacobites. This greatly influenced her outlook on the world and her poetry.
[Anna Frater] When Sìleas wrote Alasdair à Gleanna Garradh (Alasdair from Glengarry) the Macdonald Clan was is a somewhat fragile state and now she was seeing Alasdair from Glengarry, one of the other Macdonald leaders dying and in her song she is mourning the clan chiefs that the Macdonalds had lost in the previous few years. But she is also writing Alasdair’s own eulogy.
[Alison Grant] There is so much praise in the song. Sometime it is just a long list of praises. I think that there’s fourteen lines one after another of praise. They all start with “you are”.
