Daithead nan Lochlannach

[Preseantair] Bornais, Uibhist a Deas. Tha an làrach seo air an uabhas innse dhuinn mu dheidhinn daithead nan Lochlannach. A chionn ‘s gun robh na bailtean beaga aca air an togail air a’ mhachaire, a bharrachd air tuathanas agus sealg, bha iad cuideachd ris an iasgach. Am measg na chaidh a lorg eadar cnàmhan chaorach, a’ chruidh is fèith, fhuairear cnàmhan èisg an seo, fiù ‘s cnàmhan beaga mìn an sgadain.

[Coinneach MacGill-Eain] Tha iasg uabhasach fhèin cudromach airson daoine gu h-àraidh nuair a bha e doirbh dhaibh feòil sam bith eile fhaighinn. Gu h-àraidh anns a’ gheamhradh, bha an t-iasg uabhasach fhèin cudromach dhaibh. Sgadan nam measg. Bha sgadan pailt, uabhasach lìonmhor aig aon àm, agus feumaidh gun robh e gu math cudromach dhaibh mar a bha am bradan cuideachd.

The Vikings' diet

[Presenter] Bornish, South Uist. This site has told us an awful lot about the Vikings’ diet. As their little villages were built on the machair, in addition to farming and hunting, they also fished. Amongst what was found between bones of sheep, cattle and deer, they found fish bones here, even the fine, little bones of herring.

[Coinneach MacLean] Fish is awfully important for people, especially when it’s very hard to get other types of meat. Especially in the winter, the fish was awfully important to them. Herring included. Herring was abundant, really plentiful at one time and it must have been very important to them as was salmon too.
