’Alaska san àmhainn’ aig Màiri

[Màiri] Rinn mi cèic phlèan dìreach mar a sheall Sìne dhomh agus sin far a bheil ‘Alasga san àmhainn’ a’ tòiseachadh. Tha mi a’ suathadh silidh sùbh-làir air agus a-nis tha meringue ri dhèanamh.

[Màiri] Trì gealagan uighe agus sia unnsa siùcair mìn.

[Màiri] Nis mar a chì sibh, tha am meringue air fàs gu math tiugh. Feumaidh am meringue a bhith cho tiugh ’s nan cuireadh tu os cionn do cheann e nach dòrtadh e às a’ bhobhla. ’S an ath rud, tha an sponge agam deiseil ’s jam air an sponge agus ann an seo tha mi a’ dol a chur ceithir no còig cnapan reòiteig. Ann an cumadh mar seo, cumadh pioramaid mar seo. Agus ’s toigh leamsa a bhith a’ cur rud beag measan, strawberries no raspberries no ge bith dè th’ agaibh, dìreach an lùib an ice cream.

[Màiri] Agus an uair sin tha mi a’ dol a chur meringue air feadh an ice cream, a’ dèanamh cinnteach gu bheil an ice cream agus na measan air an còmhdach air fad.

[Màiri] Nis cha bhi mise a’ còmhdach ach mullach na cèice ach dh’fhaodadh tu na taobhan a dhèanamh cuideachd.

[Màiri] Sin a-nis.

[Màiri] Agus feumaidh tu a bhith luath aig an stage seo agus dìreach seo fhaighinn dhan àmhainn. Tha e nas fheàrr ma tha an àmhainn teth. A-staigh dhan àmahinn. Dà cheud airson ’s dòcha deich mionaidean.

[Màiri] Agus cho luath ’s a bhios dath brèagha òir air a’ mheringue chan eil an còrr ri dhèanamh ach ithe.

[Màiri] Chì sibh a-nis. Chì sinn ciamar a tha am blas ge-tà. Uabhasach milis ach math. Math fhèin!

English text Teacsa Beurla

Màiri’s baked alaska

[Màiri] I made a plain cake just as Sìne showed me and that is where a ‘baked Alaska’ starts. I spread strawberry jam on it and now there is meringue to make.

[Màiri] Three egg whites and six ounces of fine sugar.

[Màiri] Now as you can see, the meringue has become very thick. The meringue must be so thick that if you were to put it above your head it would not pour out of the bowl. And the next thing, my sponge is ready, jam on the sponge and here I am going to put four or five lumps of ice cream. In a shape like this, a pyramid shape like this. And I like to put a a little fruit, strawberries or raspberries or whatever you have, just with the ice cream.

[Màiri] And then I am going to spread meringue all over the ice cream, making sure that the ice cream and the fruit air completely covered.

[Màiri] Now I only cover the top of the cake but you could do the sides as well.

[Màiri] There now.

[Màiri] And you must be fast at this stage and just get this in the oven. It is better if the oven is hot. Into the oven. Two hundred for maybe 10 minutes.

[Màiri] And as soon as the meringue has a nice golden colour there is nothing to do but eat it.

[Màiri] You can see now. We will see how the taste is though. Very sweet but good. Really good!
