Agus aon de na rudan a tha air a bhith a’ còrdadh riumsa a bhith a’ dèanamh thairis air an lockdown, ’s e a bhith a’ feuchainn shìos chun a’ chidhe againn fhìn anns na Ceallan a dh’fhaicinn dè mhaorach a tha aca agus a’ feuchainn dè nì mi airson dinneir.

[Pàdruig] Nist, cha chanainn gun ghlacainn mòran anns an eathar a tha seo, seann eathar a bh’ aig m’ athair, ach bha esan, mar a bha iomadach fhear eile air Griomasaigh, bha e na iasgair. Tha iasgaireachd air a bhith làidir ann an fuil muinntir Ghriomasaigh, agus gu fortanach, chun an latha an-diugh tha iasgaireachd ceart cho cudromach an lùib beatha an eilein.

From the shore to the plate

English Beurla

[Pàdruig] Well, the weather has been fantastic and today especially in Uist, it’s very clear and hot. And one of the things I’ve been enjoying over lockdown is going down to our own pier in Kallin to see what shellfish they have and to see what I can make for dinner.

[Pàdruig] Now, I wouldn’t say that I would catch a lot in this boat, an old boat that my Dad had, but he was, as were many others in Grimsay, he was a fisherman. Fishing has been strong in the blood of people in Grimsay and luckily to this day fishing is just as important to island life.

[Pàdruig] So, won’t you come on a spin with me down to Kallin.

[Pàdruig] I’m very lucky, Kallin is only two miles down the road, one of the busiest piers in the Western Isles. There are boats of all types here, traditional Grimsay boats, bigger boats, amongst them trawlers that take in more than half the scallops from the Western Isles here.

[Pàdruig] But today I’m not looking for scallops, it’s prawns from the factory.

[Pàdruig] Alright, thank you!

[Pàdruig] There you go then, I have prawns here, and dinner to prepare.

[Pàdruig] And here’s what I got.

[Pàdruig] Look at that big beast!

[Pàdruig] I’ll keep the big ones whole, but I’ll take the shells of the small ones and I’ll put them into the food whole just as meat.

[Pàdruig] It’s paella that I’m going to make tonight.

[Pàdruig] So, I have garlic, onion, mushroom, peppers, the rice and the stock all here ready.

[Pàdruig] And that’s the prawn meat going in.

[Pàdruig] There you go then.

[Pàdruig] Another fresh dinner from Kallin.

[Pàdruig] Excellent!
