Ruaig na Mòighe (2)

Gaelic Gàidhlig

Bha mi ag innse dhuibh mu Anna Nic an Tòisich no ‘Colonel Anne’ às a’ Mhòigh, deas air Inbhir Nis. Air an t-siathamh latha deug dhen Ghearran, seachd ceud deug, ceathrad ’s a sia (1746) bha Teàrlach Òg Stiùbhart a’ fuireach aice. Chuir am Morair Loudon mìle gu leth saighdear a-mach à Inbhir Nis gu ruige a’ Mhòigh airson am Prionnsa a chur an grèim. Cha robh a’ seasamh nan rathad ach gobha na Mòighe, Dòmhnall Friseal, agus ceathrar eile.

Rinn Dòmhnall is a chàirdean othail mhòr, mar gun robh iad an cois arm nan Seumasach. Chunnaic saighdearan Loudon na cruachan mònach aig muinntir na Mòighe air fàire. Anns an dorchadas, bha iad a’ coimhead coltach ri gràisgean shaighdearan. Chuala na saighdearan Hanoibhèirianach sgiamhail agus gunnaichean gan losgadh. Cha robh fios aca nach robh ann ach còignear nan aghaidh! Agus theich iad air ais a dh’Inbhir Nis.

Dh’fhàs an gnothach ainmeil mar Ruaig na Mòighe. A rèir aithris, bha dìreach aon duine air a mharbhadh ann. B’ esan Dòmhnall Bàn MacCruimein, am pìobaire do MhacLeòid Dhùn Bheagain.

An dèidh Ruaig na Mòighe, tharraing Teàrlach Òg arm ri chèile agus rinn iad air Inbhir Nis. Bha am Morair Loudon air teicheadh. An ceann greis, lean armailt Seumasach orra a Dhòrnach ann an Cataibh far an robh sabaid ann. Chaidh grunn shaighdearan riaghaltais a chur an grèim. Nam measg, bha Mac an Tòisich fhèin.

Dh’òrdaich am Prionnsa Òg gum biodh Mac an Tòisich air a chur fo ghlas na dhachaigh fhèin anns a’ Mhòigh, fo cheannsal a mhnà, Anna. Nuair a ràinig e an taigh, thuirt ise ris, ‘Ur searbhant, a Chaiptein.’ Fhreagair esan, ‘Ur searbhant, a Chòirneil.’

An dèidh Blàr Chùil Lodair, nuair a thàinig ar-a-mach nan Seumasach gu ceann, chaidh Anna Nic an Tòisich a chur an grèim. Bha i fo ghlas ann an Inbhir Nis airson grunn sheachdainean. Bha na saighdearan agus an oifigearan gu math measail oirre, a dh’aindeoin ’s gun robh i na nàmhaid, oir bha i uabhasach brèagha. Cha robh an Seanalair Hawley nam measg, ge-tà. Mhol esan do cheannard arm an riaghaltais, Diùc Chumberland, gun sìnte a h-amhaich air a’ chroich. Aig a’ cheann thall, ge-tà, chaidh a beatha a shàbhaladh.

Bliadhnaichean an dèidh làimhe, thachair Anna ri Cumberland aig bàla ann an Lunnainn. Thathar ag ràdh gun do dh’iarr Cumberland oirre dannsadh leis. Thagh e port-dannsaidh Hanoibhèirianach. An dèidh an dannsa, dh’iarr Anna air an Diùc dannsa eile a ghabhail còmhla rithe. Agus thagh ise port Seumasach. Cò aige tha fios a bheil fìrinn sam bith anns an stòiridh!

Chaidh inbhe bàillidh Inbhir Nis a bhuileachadh air Anna ann an seachd ceud deug, seasgad ’s a trì (1763). Chaochail i ann an Lìte bliadhna air fhichead an dèidh sin.

Bu mhath leam crìoch a chur air a’ chunntas seo le iomradh air dealbh a rinneadh de dh’Anna nuair a bha i òg. Bhathar riamh a’ smaoineachadh nach robh aice air a broilleach ach sròl air ceann shuas a dreasa. Ach, nuair a chaidh obair gleidhidh a dhèanamh air an dealbh anns na caogadan dhen fhicheadamh linn, lorgadh bràiste a bh’ ann bho thùs air a broilleach. Air a’ bhràiste, bha dealbh de Theàrlach Òg Stiùbhart.

Faclan na Litreach: Anna Nic an Tòisich: Anne Mackintosh; gràisgean shaighdearan: gangs of soldiers; Ruaig na Mòighe: The Rout of Moy; Blàr Chùil Lodair: The Battle of Culloden; bàla: ball (dance).

Abairtean na Litreach: : airson am Prionnsa a chur an grèim: to capture the Prince; cha robh a’ seasamh nan rathad ach gobha na Mòighe, Dòmhnall Friseal, agus ceathrar eile: the only people standing in their way were the smith of Moy, Donald Fraser, and four others; rinn X othail mhòr, mar gun robh iad an cois arm nan Seumasach: X made a great hubbub as if they were accompanied by the Jacobite army; chunnaic saighdearan Loudon na cruachan mònach air fàire: Loudon’s soldiers saw the peat stacks on the skyline; chuala X sgiamhail agus gunnaichean gan losgadh: X heard shrieking and guns firing; nach robh ann ach còignear nan aghaidh: that only five men were against them; bha dìreach aon duine air a mharbhadh ann: only one man was killed there; a Dhòrnach ann an Cataibh: to Dornoch in East Sutherland; dh’òrdaich X gum biodh Mac an Tòisich air a chur fo ghlas na dhachaigh fhèin, fo cheannsal a mhnà: X ordered that Mackintosh be place under arrest in his own home, under the authority of his wife; a dh’aindeoin ’s gun robh i na nàmhaid: despite her being an enemy; mhol esan do cheannard arm an riaghaltais, Diùc Chumberland, gun sìnte a h-amhaich air a’ chroich: he recommended to the head of the government army, the Duke of Cumberland, that her neck be stretched on the gibbet; thagh ise port Seumasach: she chose a Jacobite tune; cò aige tha fios a bheil fìrinn sam bith anns an stòiridh: who knows if there is any truth in the story; chaidh inbhe bàillidh Inbhir Nis a bhuileachadh air Anna: Anne was granted the status of a burgess of Inverness; nach robh aice air a broilleach ach sròl air ceann shuas a dreasa: that all she had on her breast was lace at the top of her dress; lorgadh bràiste: a brooch was found.

Puing-chànain na Litreach: bha Teàrlach Òg Stiùbhart a’ fuireach aice: Bonnie Prince Charlie was staying with her. Idiomatically, we use the preposition ‘ aig’ in this phraseology. Bha thu a’ fuireach againn nuair a bha thu òg ‘you were staying with us when you were young’. Bha mi a’ fuireach aca airson trì mìosan ‘I was staying with them for three months.’

Gnàthas-cainnt na Litreach: gu ruige a’ Mhòigh: to Moy [ gu ruige takes the nominative case].
