FH FH

We are going to have a look at the Gaelic sound made by the letters fh.

In most instances, the Gaelic fh sound is silent, with a few exceptions that we shall explore in a little bit. For now, the silent fh can be heard in m’ fhalt (my hair):

m' fhalt

my hair

Also, in An Fhraing (France) and dà fhichead (forty):

An Fhraing

France

dà fhichead

forty

When fh does have a sound in some Gaelic words, it is pronounced like the English ‘h’, such as in fhèin or fhìn (self), fhathast (yet), and fhuair (got):

fhèin / fhìn

self

fhathast

yet

fhuair

got
