Launch of new book festival in Inverness
[Innes Munro – Presenter] A new book festival was launched in Inverness today. The Ness Book Fest, which runs over the weekend, will try to bring local writers to public attention. They also aim to encourage young people to read. Ruairidh MacIver went to one of the festival’s Gaelic events.
[Ruairidh MacIver - Reporter] Children at Inverness Gaelic School, gathered together with local author Ceitidh Hutton. A chance to meet the author and some of the characters from her books. As you would expect, she values reading in Gaelic very highly.
[Ceitidh Hutton] I think it’s very important that books are originally written in Gaelic instead of just being translated. And also with regards to parents, it’s quite difficult for them to read a book in Gaelic if it’s not their first language. So my thinking for ‘Broc ann an Cnoc’ was that children who are fluent can read it and parents who don’t have much Gaelic can perhaps try one sentence at a time, like ‘what is your name’ or something like that, and it means they’re still able to read a book with the children.
[Ruairidh MacIver - Reporter] Much of what the children take home comes from school. And teachers also are aware of the benefits of reading.
[Alison MacLeod] Well it’s very important because, as a school, we have been looking at reading and how important reading for pleasure is. This opportunity to meet with authors gives them a chance to speak to them and get ideas from them. It provides them with a wider vocabulary, it teaches them grammar, the language and things like that. Therefore it’s very important for them for developing their reading skills.
[Ruairidh MacIver – Reporter] An exhibition by the Gaelic Books Council was also included in the day’s events. This is all part of promoting reading. And in Ceitidh’s opinion, Gaelic should be at the heart of all festivals like this.
[Ceitidh Hutton] I think if we’re going to start something like this again that Gaelic needs to be included from the very beginning. So I hope, if we go ahead next year that they’ll think from the beginning that Gaelic should be included from the outset.
[Ruairidh MacIver – Reporter] It is hoped that these children will be encouraged to spend more time reading books. And that’s a good objective for a literature festival.
