Fèis Leabhraichean 'Faclan'

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Màiri Rodgers – Neach-aithris] Nochdaidh bàrd nàiseanta na h-Alba Jackie Kay agus an sgrìobhadair ainmeil Philip Hoare aig an 6mh Fèis Leabhraichean 'Faclan' ann an Leòdhas an t-seachdain-sa. Bidh ùghdaran ionadail lethid Chaoimhinn MacNèill agus an t-Oll.Fionnlagh MacLeòid cuideachd an sàs ann, uile gu lèir air an toirt còmhla fo chuspair na bliadhna-sa - an Cuan Siar. Tha an aithris seo aig Ruairidh Rothach.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] An-uiridh ’s e fuil an cuspair a bh’ aig Faclan. Am bliadhna-sa, An Cuan Siar, cuspair cho farsaing ris an fhairge fhèin shaoilinn. Le sin, bha tòrr roghainn aig stiùiriche na fèise, Ruairidh Moireach, nuair a bha e a’ cur clàr na bliadhna ri chèile.

[Ruairidh Moireach] Tha, tha bàrdachd againn mar eisimpleir an-dràsta le Iain Stephen - am Maritime agus sgrìobhadairean a tha fuireach anns na h-eileanan mar Kevin MacNeil agus Amy Liptrot, ’s Mallachy Tallack agus mar sin ach cuideachd sgrìobhadairean a tha sgrìobhadh mu dheidhinn cùisean mar sin mar Philip Hoare, duine uabhasach ainmeil agus a bhuannaich duais Samuel Johnson airson an leabhar aige mu dheidhinn na muice-mara.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] ‘S e seo an t-siathamh bliadhna dhen fhèis. Anns na bliadhnaichean a dh’ fhalbh tha measgachadh de dh’ òraidean, leughaidhean agus filmichean air a bhith soirbheachail. Ach dè cho doirbh ’s a tha e an fhèis a chumail ùr agus tarraingeach? Agus a bheil e doirbh a bhith faighinn daoine, leis an uiread fèisean ùra a tha air nochdadh thar nam bliadhnaichean a dh’ fhalbh.

[Ruairidh Moireach] Cha d’ fhuair mise e duilich. Chan eil mi ag ràdh gu bheil e furasta a bharrachd, fhios agad ’s tha fèisean leabhraichean gu math diofraichte. Tha na biastan mòra mar Dùn Èideann agus Hay on Wye agus Cheltenham ’s mar sin, tha iad a’ dol airson cola-deug agus ceudan de sgrìobhadairean an sin, fhios agad. Dh’ fhaodadh tu ràdh duine sam bith a tha a’ sgrìobhadh leabhar am-bliadhna fhios agad gum bi iad aig na fèisean sin. Tha sinn tòrr nas teinne, trì làithean agus tha a h-uile càil còmhla ’s air cuspair teann cuideachd. Agus mar sin tha Faclan gu math eadar-dhealaichte bho na fèisean eile, fiù’s fèisean beag mar fèis Ulapul.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] Tòisichidh Faclan a-màireach aig An Lanntair ann an Steòrnabhagh agus bidh an fhèis a’ leantainn gu Disathairne. Ruairidh Rothach, BBC An Là, Steòrnabhagh.

'Faclan' Book Festival

English Beurla

[Màiri Rodgers – Reporter] Scots Makar Jackie Kay and the renowned author Philip Hoare will appear at the 6th ‘Faclan’ Book Festival in Lewis this week. Local authors such as Kevin MacNeill and Dr Finlay MacLeod will also feature, all gathered together under this year’s theme – the North Atlantic.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] Last year blood was Faclan’s theme. This year, the North Atlantic, a subject as vast as the ocean itself . Therefore, festival director Roddy Murray had a lot of choice when he was compiling this year’s line-up.

[Roddy Murray] We currently have poetry by Ian Stephen - The Maritime and writers who live on the islands such as Kevin MacNeil, Amy Liptrot, Mallachy Tallack and so on but also writers that have written about the theme such as Philip Hoare, who is very renowned and who won the Samuel Johnson prize for this book about the whale.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] This is the 6th year of the festival. In previous years a mixture of speeches, readings and films has been a success. But how difficult is it to keep the festival fresh and appealing? And is it hard to get writers involved with the amount of new festivals that have appeared in past years?

[Roddy Murray] I didn’t find it hard. I’m not saying it’s easy either, you know, and book festivals are very different. The giants such as Edinburgh, Hay on Wye and Cheltenham et cetera, they run for a fortnight and have hundreds of writers present. You could say anybody who is writing a book this year will be at those festivals. Our schedule is much tighter, three days and everything is together and under a rigid theme too. Therefore Faclan is very different to the other festivals, even the smaller ones such as the Ullapool festival.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] Faclan will begin tomorrow at An Lanntair in Stornoway and the festival will continue until Saturday. Roddy Munro, BBC An Là, Stornoway.
