And then he’d take it home with him and try and transfer it onto paper. But none of these slates survived I’m afraid.

[Gary Innes] I wrote a tune called ‘Our Heroes’ which is going to get played tonight and we released it with the shinty’s heroes band, with the Patterson’s pipes as well, 100 years to the very day that Donald Paterson fell on the fields of Festubert playing those very pipes, with the pipes playing £100 years on and such like so that story for me, I think, is just incredible.

Shinty players and pipers in the First World War remembered
[Màiri Rodgers – Presenter] The role played by shinty players and pipers in the First World War was commemorated at an event in Stirling at the weekend. Special reference was made to Pipe Major Willie Lawrie from Ballachulish who wrote the famous tune ‘Battle of the Somme’. Andreas Wolff was at the event.
[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] Linda MacLeod was among those on stage at an event in Stirling Castle at the weekend. The roles played by shinty players and pipers in the First World War was being commemorated.
[Hugh Dan MacLennan] It almost ruined shinty. It was agreed at the end of the First World War that a special effort would be made to renew and revive the game. And you can see that a lot of the tournaments that we have taking place today, they were set up in the years after the war, in the 20’s, when youth matches and tournaments and all of that was set up. There were one or two people like Lord Lovat for example, he was the chairperson of the Camanachd Association at the time, he was president and he was part of that.
[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] The tune ‘The Battle of the Somme’ was played, which was written by Pipe Major Willie Lawrie from Ballachulish.
