Sgìre Latharna a' togail sgoth

[Màiri Rodgers – Preseantair] Bidh buidheann bheag ann an sgìre Latharna a’ sireadh dachaigh ùr a dh’ aithghearr dhan bhàta fiodha a thathas air ùr thogail. Coltach ri grunn bhuidhnean air feadh na h-Alba tha coimhearsnachd Latharna air bàta St Ayles a thogail iad fhèin agus iad ag amas a-nis air a dhol an sàs ann am farpaisean, mas e is gum faigh iad seada ùr air a shon an toiseach. Tha an aithris seo aig Andreas Wolff.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Tha buidheann bheag anns A’ Bharra Calltainn a’ togail sgoth an-dràsta. Cha robh eòlas sam bith aca mun gnothach ron seo. Thòisich iad oirre an-uiridh.

[Seumas Dòmhnallach] Oh uill bha dùil againn crìoch a chur oirre bho chionn fhada ach cha do thachair sin fhathast. Chan eil mòran ri dhèanamh mar a tha thu faicinn, tha na tobhtaichean air a dhol innte ’s beagan sgioblachadh a dhèanamh air ’s glaodh ’s peantadh an uair sin. Feumaidh sinn, mar a tha thu a’ faicinn, an toiseach ‘s an deireadh aig na stern posts, feumaidh iad sin an gearradh, uill chan eil mòran an sin. Agus a peantadh an uair sin agus feumaidh sinn ràimh a dhèanamh cuideachd.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Tha buidhnean air feadh na h-Alba a’ togail sgothan dhe leithid agus tha iad a’ ceannach na tha a dhìth orra bho chompanaidh ann am Fìobha. Tha iad sin a’ deisealachadh nam pìosan fiodha a tha a dhìth air a shon agus bidh na buidhnean gan cur còmhla. Ann an seo, anns a’ Bharra Calltainn chan eil fada aca ri dhol.

[Seumas Dòmhnallach] Tha mi smaoineachadh gu bheil còrr math is 50 dhiubh mu chuairt Alba an-dràsta dhan fheadhainn sin ’s tha 14 no 15 gan togail an-dràsta fhèin ’s bha mi bruidhinn le fear o chionn ghoirid ’s bha e smaoineachadh gun tòisicheadh iad air a thogail ann an Taigh an Uillt.

[Seumas Dòmhnallach] Seo a-nis an stiùir Andreas, seo an aon phìos dhen bhàta tha dìreach, deiseil.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Ach feumaidh iad dachaigh ùr a lorg air a son a-nise.

[Seumas Dòmhnallach] Tha an t-àite seo, chaidh a reic o chionn ghoirid agus an fheadhainn a tha gan gabhail, feumaidh iad a ghabhail thairis. Feumaidh a h-uile duine a bhith a-mach à seo air deireadh na mìos seo. ’S mar sin feumaidh sinn oisean air choreigin fhaighinn far an cuir sinn i gus am faigh sinn air crìoch a chur oirre.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Chan eil sin a-nis fada air falbh agus gu dearbha tha farpaisean iomraidh a’ dol eadar na buidhnean cuideachd. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là, Am Barra Caltainn.

Lorn community build a St Ayles skiff

[Màiri Rodgers – Preseantair] A small group in the district of Lorn will soon be looking for a new home for the new wooden boat they are building. Like a number of other groups across Scotland, the Lorn community have built a St Ayles skiff and they aim now to take part in races, if they can find a new shed for it first. Andreas Wolff has this report.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] A small group in Barcaldine are currently building a skiff. They had no knowledge of the business before this. They began building her last year.

[James MacDonald] Oh well we had hoped to have her finished a long time ago but it’s not happened yet. There’s not much to do, as you can see the rower’s benches have gone in, it needs a little tidy up, glued together and then it needs painted. You can see we need to cut the front and back stern posts, there’s not much in that. Then paint it and make the oars too.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] There are groups across Scotland building skiffs like this and they buy the supplies they require from a company in Fife. They prepare the pieces of wood needed to build the boat and the group assembles it. Here, in Barcaldine, they don’t have long to go.

[James MacDonald] I think there’s a lot more than 50 of them currently around Scotland and there are 14 or 15 being built just now. I was speaking to a man recently who thought they would begin building one in Taynuilt.

[James MacDonald] This here is the rudder Andreas, this is the one part of boat that is complete.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] But they now need to find here a new home for her.

[James MacDonald] This place was recently sold and those who bought it are taking it over. Everyone needs to be out of here at the end of the month. Therefore, we need to find a corner somewhere where we can put her in order to get her finished.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] That’s not far away now and certainly, there are rowing competitions between the teams too. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là in Barcaldine.
