Bratach Ghallaibh

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Innes Rothach – Preseantair] Chaidh bratach ùr oifigeil fhoillseachadh airson Gallaibh an-diugh - a' chiad bhratach-siorrachd air Tìr-Mòr na h-Alba. As dèidh co-fharpais agus bhòt am measg an t-sluaigh, chaidh bratach a thaghadh a tha a' riochdachadh - sa phrìomh àite - dualchas Lochlannach na sgìre.

Bha a’ bhratach a chaidh a thaghadh ann am bhòt poblach dìomhair, ‘s daoine air bhioran gu faiceadh iad i.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Tha i a’ gabhail a-steach a’ chrois Lochlannach. Tha an gorm a’ riochdachadh na fairge ‘s an còrr a’ ghainmheach. ‘S e an dubh sglèat ainmeil Ghallaibh agus anns an oisean, Birlinn seann suaicheantas na siorrachd.

[Cairistiona Stone] Is sinn a’chiad siorrachd a tha a’ dol air adhart le bhith faighinn bratach a tha dìreach a’ sealltainn mu dheidhinn a tha sinn mar shiorrachd agus na nithean a tha prìseil agus cudromach anns an t-siorrachd againne a thaobh dualchais.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Tha a’ chrois Lochlannach cuideachd air brataichean Arcaibh is Shealtainn an àite eile an Alba aig a bheil brataichean oifigeil. Tha am Morair Leòmhann toilichte g’ eil tìr-mòr a-nis ga leantainn.

[An Dr Ìosaph Marrow] It’s the first one in the mainland, that’s why I’m making a great deal of it because I think it was a very exciting thing for me to see the insurgence of flag making and design in areas and Caithness being the first I wanted to give as much support to it as possible.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Tha dòchas gun tog a’ bhratach ìomhaigh Ghallaibh, ‘s tha i na comharra air g’ eil na Gallaich gam faicinn fhèin mar shluagh sònraichte.

[Cairistiona Stone] Tha iad a’ gabhail tlachd nan eachdraidh agus nan dualchais. Tha grèim gu math teann aig muinntir Ghallaibh air a th’ annta agus na nithean a tha prìseil agus cudromach dhaibhsan.

[Dòmhnall Moireasdan – Neach-aithris] Fad ghinealaichean ‘s e bratach an Aonaidh no mar a tha an-diugh bratach na h-Alba a bha nochdte air togalaichean Ghallaibh. Ach bhon diugh, tha am bratach fhèin aca cuideachd. Ge bith an greimich i air inntinn an t-sluaigh an seo. Dòmhnall Moireastan, BBC An Là, Inbhir Ùige.

Caithness flag

English Beurla

[Innes Munro – Presenter] A new official flag for Caithness was unveiled today – the first county flag on mainland Scotland. After a competition and a public vote, a flag was chosen which represents - primarily - the area’s Viking heritage. It’s been given official recognition by the Lord Lyon, Scotland’s King of Arms. Donald Morrison reports

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] Caithness councillors walked to the service, accompanied by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. Here are some of the flags designed by school children in the area which weren’t successful. The flag chosen by public vote was kept secret and people were excited to see it.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] It features a Nordic cross. The blue represents the sea and the rest, the sand. The black is for the famous Caithness slate and in the corner, the county’s traditional galley ship emblem.

[Christine Stone] We are the first county who have gone ahead with getting a flag and that just shows what a strong identity we have and shows the things that are precious and important in our county regarding our heritage.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] The Nordic cross is also features on the Orkney and Shetland flags – two other places in Scotland with an official flag. The Lord Lyon is pleased that the mainland is following suit.

[Dr Joseph Morrow] It’s the first one in the mainland, that’s why I’m making a great deal of it because I think it was a very exciting thing for me to see the insurgence of flag making and design in areas and Caithness being the first I wanted to give as much support to it as possible.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] There’s hope the flag will raise the profile of Caithness, and it shows that the people of Caithness see themselves as being distinctive.

[Christine Stone] They take pride in their history and heritage. They have a strong identity and know what’s important and precious to them.

[Donald Morrison – Reporter] For generations it was the Union Jack or like today – the Scottish flag which appeared on buildings in Caithness. But from today, they now also have their own flag. Whether it captures the public’s imagination remains to be seen. Donald Morrison, BBC An Là, Wick.
