[Moira Nic a’ Phearsain] We got heavily into winter and there was a chance of not getting back the same the same day. So we asked the people on the Leverburgh ferry if they would take it over for us. And I took it up to Berneray and put it on the ferry and Jill collected it at the other end and that’s how it worked from then on.

[Moira Nic a’ Phearsain] I was really enjoying it and it was quite an exciting project to be involved in. But it was slightly daunting too but once it was finished there was quite a feeling of achievement at the end of it.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland on tour
[Innes Munro – Presenter] For the first time a part of The Great Tapestry of Scotland will be on show in the Western Isles. The hanging tapestry will be on display at Museum nan Eilean in Uist. Our reporter, Happy MacDonald, got a preview on what’s to see when the exhibition opens in Liniclete School on Saturday.
[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] 30 panels of The Great Tapestry of Scotland have come to Benbecula for an exhibition that will last a little over five weeks. Here is how they were chosen out of the 149 panels in total.
[Lisa Wilson] It was very difficult and there were a lot we wanted but there wasn’t space to hang them all so we had to be quite strict on ourselves. And so we chose ones which were relevant to the islands and we also wanted ones which would appeal to everyone.
[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Two pieces were sewn in the Western Isles. One of those, commemorating the sinking of the Iolaire, sailed many times on the ferry between Leverburgh and Berneray and two people from Harris and a lady from Uist worked on it.
[Moira MacPherson] We got heavily into winter and there was a chance of not getting back the same the same day. So we asked the people on the Leverburgh ferry if they would take it over for us. And I took it up to Berneray and put it on the ferry and Jill collected it at the other end and that’s how it worked from then on.
[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] A wide array of subjects are represented in the pictures.
[Lisa Wilson] We have ones on Callanish, The Iolaire, Prince Charles and also for the boys we chose football and rugby ones. For children we have ones with verses on them, for women there are some containing flowers and pretty pictures.
[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] If this hanging tapestry lasts for centuries to come like others have, the names of the seamsters could last with it.
[Moira MacPherson] I was really enjoying it and it was quite an exciting project to be involved in. But it was slightly daunting too but once it was finished there was quite a feeling of achievement at the end of it.
