Taigh-smocaidh Uibhist ga ath-fhosgladh

[Innes Rothach – Preseantair] Cha bu chòir gum bi fada ann mus bi bradan ga smocadh ann an Uibhist a-rithist fo bhratach Salar. Chaidh an taigh-smocaidh ann an Loch A’ Chàrnain a dhùnadh o chionn beagan mhìosan leis a’ chompanaidh bhradain Loch Duart. A-nis ge-tà, tha fear a bha na mhanaidsear aig a’ chompanaidh sin air an togalach a cheannach agus tha coltas ann gum fosgail e a-rithist ann an seachdain no dhà. Tha tuilleadh aig Shona NicDhòmhnaill.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Dhùin taigh-smocaidh bhradan Loch Duart ann an Uibhist a Deas anns a’ Ghiblein agus chaill seachdnar an obair. A-nis, tha fear a bha na mhanaidsear, aig an àm sin, air an goireas a cheannach. Tha còignear dhe na chaidh a phàigheadh dheth air ais ag obair ann an Loch A’ Chàrnain, còmhla ris.

[Aonghas Mac a’ Mhaoilein] Bha e furasta gu leòr, bhruidhinn mi ris an luchd-obrach a bha ag obair còmhla rium roimhe, ‘s bha daoine ann, a bha ann, a bha dèonach tilleadh aig an robh experience gu leòr airson an obair a dhèanamh.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Nuair a thòisich an taigh-smocaidh a tha air mo chùlaibh annan seo, ‘s ann fon ainm Salar agus bha e aithnichte air feadh an t-saoghail. Bha e cudromach an t-ainm sin fhaighinn air ais.

[Aonghas Mac a’ Mhaoilein] Uill tha mi an dòchas gum bi sinn a’ tòiseachadh leis na customers a bh’ aig Loch Duart, tha sinn a’ faighinn sin air ais cuideachd. So, tha sin dol a thilleadh air ais gu Salar. Tha sinn am beachd an uair sin a h-uile sìon as urrainn dhuinn a dhèanamh, an t-ainm fhaighinn a-mach agus innse gu bheil sinn air ais ag obair agus mas urrainn dhuinn, a h-uile duine bh’ ann roimhe a thilleadh thugainn.

[Iain McRuairidh] Bha ainm an sin. Bha e air feadh an t-saoghail gu lèir, dh’aithnicheadh tu gur e seo biadh ceart às na h-eileanan agus bha e suas ri biadh sam bith ann an àite sam bith far am biodh tu air feadh an t-saoghail.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Fhuair an gnìomhachas taic bho bhuidhnean poblach agus gu cudromach bho aon bhuidheann ionadail– Stòras Uibhist.

[Iain McRuairidh] Bha sinne a’ faicinn, ma thèid againn ri beagan a chur a-staigh aig deireadh a h-uile sìon riamh airson ‘s gun tig e air adhart, sin agad am prìomh adhbhar, ann an dòigh, a chaidh Stòras a chur air bhonn an toiseach.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Tha dùil ris a’ chiad bhradan smocte ann an seachdain no dhà. Shona NicDhòmhnaill, BBC An Là, ann an Loch A’ Chàrnain.

Uist smokehouse set to reopen

[Innes Munro – Presenter] It shouldn’t be long now until salmon is being smoked again in Uist under the name Salar. The smokehouse in Lochcarnan, which was run by the Loch Duart company, closed a few months ago. Now, one of the one of the company’s ex-managers has bought the building and it is expected to open again in a week or two. Shona MacDonald has more.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The Loch Duart salmon smokehouse in South Uist closed in April and seven people lost their jobs. Now, a man who was a manager at the time, has bought the facility. Five of those who were paid off are now back working with him in Lochcarnan.

[Iain MacRury] It was straight forward enough, I spoke to the staff who worked with me previously and some who had the relevant experience were willing to return to carry out the work.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] When the smokehouse behind me first began, it was recognised worldwide under the name Salar. It was important to get that name back.

[Iain MacRury] Well we hope to begin with Loch Duart’s customers, getting them back too. So we’re going to return back to Salar. We hope then to do as much as possible to get the name back out there and tell everyone we’re back working and if we can, get all the previous customers to return to us.

[Angus MacMillan] The name was there. It was recognised worldwide, many knew that this was a quality product from the islands and it was up there with any other recognisable food product from around the world.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The business received support from public groups and importantly from one local group – Stòras Uibhist.

[Angus MacMillan] We could see that if we contributed a little that that it would help with development and that’s the main reason, in a sense, that Stòras Uibhist was set up in the first place.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The first smoked salmon is expected in a week or two. Shona MacDonald, BBC An Là, in Lochcarnan.
