Co-labhairt Eaglais na h-Alba

[Iain Macilleathain – Preseantair] Tha a' Ghàidhlig ann an cunnart bàsachadh ann an Eaglais na h-Alba, ma leanas cùisean mar a tha iad. Sin an rabhadh làidir a chaidh a thoirt seachad aig co-labhairt a chuir an eaglais air dòigh aig an deireadh-sheachdain. Bha "A' Chiad Cheum" a' beachdachadh air mar a ghabhas adhradh na Gàidhlig a leasachadh san eaglais. Tha an aithris-seo aig Coinneach Mac a' Ghobhainn.

[Coinneach Mac a’ Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Cha b’e òraidean a-mhàin a bh’ aig co-labhairt mun Ghàidhlig ann an Eaglais na h-Alba an Glaschu Disathairne. Còmhradh, cnuasachadh agus beagan ciùil cuideachd.

[An t-Oll Urr Aonghas Moireasdan] Bha an latha gu math fada ach tha mi smaoineachadh gur e latha fìor mhath a bha againn an-diugh. Tha sinn air cluinntinn bho luchd-labhairt bha fìor chomasach le òraidean a bha susbainteach agus cuideachail agus tha mi an dòchas gun tèid sinn air adhart le seo, le an dàrna ceum ‘s an treas cheum ‘s dòcha ach ‘s e latha fìor mhisneachail a bh’ againn an-diugh.

[Coinneach Mac a’ Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Eadar òraidean air na meadhanan agus dòighean ùra Gàidheil a thàladh dhan eaglais, b’ e a’ phrìomh cheist is còir dhan eaglais dèanamh?

[An t-Urr Iain Urchardan] Iomadh rud chanainn-sa agus an-còmhnaidh bunait a h-uile càil, chanadh tu ùrnaigh. Chanainn cuideachd ge-tà ann an dòigh deas-làmhach, practaigeach, airgead a chur a-steach ann, cantainn “tha sinn a’ creidsinn ann an obair mar seo gu leithid a dh’ìre agus gun cuir sinn ar n-airgead far a bheil ar beòil” agus gun canadh iad fiù’s gun dèanadh iad oifigear-leasachaidh Gàidhlig anns an eaglais airson a bhith misneachadh dhaoine agus a’ dèanamh nan ceanglaichean agus a’ neartachadh na h-obrach.

[Coinneach Mac a’ Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] ‘S b’ e dòchas agus misneachd rud a bha pailt ann an Eaglais an Tron far an deach a’ cho-labhairt a chumail, ged nach robhar air am mealladh mu na dùbhlain.

[Ùisdean Stiùbhart] Feumaidh sinn cuimhneachadh san latha an-diugh, tha a’ Ghàidhlig lag anns an eaglais. Tha searmonachadh Gàidhlig, tha seirbhisean Gàidhlig lag. Feumaidh sinn sin aideachadh. Ach chan eil e marbh agus rud nach eil marbh ‘s urrainn dha bhith air a thoirt beò.

[Coinneach Mac a’ Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Eadar sean agus òg nochd gu leòr air an latha fhèin. Ach dhaibhsan, robh e air a bhith na latha luachmhor?

[Fireannach 1] Tha gu dearbha. Tha e air a bhith uabhasach inntinneach a bhith seo an-diugh ag èisteachd ri na h-òraidean, tha e air a bhith uabhasach fhèin math. Gu h-àraidh an sin na beachdan aig Dòmhnall Meek fhaighinn.

[Fireannach 2] Tha, latha math dha-rìribh a bh’againn an-diugh. Thàinig sinne an seo còmhla ri coitheanal St Columba’s mar a chanas iad, St Vincent Street ann an Glaschu.

[Boireannach 1] Chòrd e rium math dha-rìribh. Tha ùidh agam ann an seirbhisean Gàidhlig agus choinnich mi an t-uabhas dhaoine as aithne dhomh.

[Coinneach Mac a’ Ghobhainn – Neach-aithris] Ach ‘s ann a-nise tha sùil air na an eaglais airson an ath cheum a ghabhail. Coinneach Mac a’ Ghobhainn, BBC An ann an Glaschu.

Church of Scotland Conference

[Iain Maclean – Presenter] Gaelic is in danger of dying in the Church of Scotland, if things continue as they are. That’s the strong warning given at a conference the church organised at the weekend. “The First Step” was considering how Gaelic worship can be developed in the church. Coinneach Smith has this report.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] It wasn’t just speeches at the conference about Gaelic in the Church of Scotland. Chat, debate and some music too.

[Rev Dr Angus Morrison] The day was quite long but I think we had a very good day today. We have heard from very competent speakers, with speeches that were substantial and helpful and I hope we can move forward with this, with the second and third steps perhaps, but it was a very encouraging day we had today.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] Between speeches on the media and new ways to attract Gaels to the church, the main question was – what should the church do?

[Rev Iain Urquhart] Many things I would say, but at the root of it all is prayer. I would also say though in a practical sense, money needs to be put in and they should be saying, “we believe in this work to such an extent that we will put our money where our mouth is.” Even if they were to agree to a Gaelic development officer in the church to encourage people, to make those ties and strengthen the work.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] Hope and confidence were two things that were plentiful in the Tron Church, where the conference took place, although people were not disillusioned with the challenges that lie ahead.

[Hugh Stewart] We must remember in this day and age, Gaelic is weak in the church. Gaelic sermons, Gaelic services are weak. We have to admit this. But it’s not dead and something that isn’t dead can be brought to life.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] There were plenty people present on the day, both young and old. But for them, was the day beneficial?

[Gentleman 1] Certainly, yes. It’s been very interesting to be here today listening to the speeches, it’s been very good. Especially to hear Donald Meek’s thoughts.

[Gentleman 2] Yes, we had a very good day indeed today. We came here along with the congregation of St Columba’s, St Vincent Street in Glasgow.

[Lady 1] I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have an interest in Gaelic services and I met lots of people I knew.

[Coinneach Smith – Reporter] But now the focus is on what the church will do to take the next step. Coinneach Smith, BBC An Là in Glasgow.
