Cùrsa-bogaidh Gàidhlig airson tidsearan

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Innes Rothach - Preseantair] Mar as àbhaist, bidh tidsearan a’ teagaisg dhaoine ach air an t-seachdain-sa chaidh, ‘s iad an luchd-teagaisg a bha ag ionnsachadh. Agus buidheann dhiubh a’ tadhal air Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann airson pàirt a ghabhail ann an cùrsa-bogaidh Gàidhlig. Mar a tha Dàibhidh Eyre ag aithris, tha dùil gun till iad dhan Oilthigh a dh’ aithghearr airson tuilleadh leasachaidh a dhèanamh air an cuid Gàidhlig. Ach, am biodh e comasach dhaibh a bhith a’ teagaisg tro mheadhan a' chànain?

[Dàibhidh Eyre – Neach-aithris] Tidsearan a’ gabhail cofaidh is a’ cabadaich ri chèile ann an Gàidhlig. Ach, chan e sgoil Ghàidhlig a tha seo agus chan eil a’ chuid as motha dhe na tidsearan a’ teagaisg tro mheadhan a’ chànain. Ged-thà, tha iad uile air Gàidhlig ionnsachadh gu ìre adhartach agus tha iad a-nis a’ dèanamh cùrsa-bogaidh aig Roinn na Ceiltis aig Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann. Cothrom dhaibh a bhith a’ leasachadh nan sgilean aca.

[Denise MacColl] Tha mi teagaisg ann am Bun-sgoil Onthank ann an Cille Mheàrnaig tro meadhan na Gàidhlig, ach ‘s e tidsear Beurla a th’ annam, really. Ò, tha mi glè thoilichte a bhith air a’ chùrsa, cothrom fìor mhath airson ionnsachadh mòran Gàidhlig le tidsearan fileanta aig an ìre airson inbheach. Tha e glè chudromach agus feumail dhomh.

[Dàibhidh Eyre – Neach-aithris] Tha an cùrsa-bogaidh, mar a’ chiad cheum dha na tidsearan a tha seo. Tha dùil aca uile tilleadh san Lùnastal gus cùrsa làn-ùine a dhèanamh a mhaireas bliadhna sgoile, GIFT an t-ainm a th’ air, Gaelic Immersion for Teachers. Chaidh a chruthachadh le Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann agus Oilthigh Srath Chluaidh. Oidhirp a th’ann gus tidsearan a bharrachd fhastadh gus teagaisg tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig.

[An t-Oll Wilson MacLeòid] Uill, ‘s e cùrsa a th’ ann do thidsearan fad sheachdain, ach tha seo co-cheangailte ri cùrsa nas motha a tha sinn a’ dol a dhèanamh eadar Oilthigh Dhùn Èideann agus Oilthigh Srath Chluaidh a’ toirt tidsearan bho ìre eadar-mheadhanach ann an Gàidhlig agus gan toirt, tha sinn an dòchas gu fileantachd los gun tèid aca air teagaisg tron Ghàidhlig aig a’ cheann thall.

[An t-Oll Wilson MacLeòid] Tha e follaiseach nach eil gu leòr a’ tighinn tro na slighean àbhaisteach, ceumannan oilthigh, na cùrsaichean a th’ ann mu thràth, agus seo slighe ùr do thidsearan a tha ag obair mu thràth, ach a tha feumach air barrachd taic agus sgilean a thaobh a’ chànain fhèin.

[Dàibhidh Eyre – Neach-aithris] Fhad’s a bha iad an seo, fhuair na tidsearan cothrom bruidhinn ri cuid dhe na buidhnean Gàidhlig, mar Clì Gàidhlig, Stòrlann agus Comann na Gàidhlig a bhios a’ toirt taic agus cuideachadh do thidsearan, an chuid taobh a-staigh agus taobh a-muigh na sgoile.

[Tara NicFhraing] Tha mi fhìn dìreach an seo airson a bhith a’ sealltainn do thidsearan gu bheil taic ann, taobh a-muigh na sgoile, a bhith a’ toirt taic a thaobh clubaichean sgoile is obair, clubaichean obair-dachaigh is clubaichean sradagan, duaisean ùr’ is rudan mar sin gus cothroman a chruthachadh do chlann Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn taobh a-muigh a’ chlas.

[Dàibhidh Eyre – Neach-aithris] Agus bha e follaiseach gun robh miann mòr aig na tidsearan seo a bhith a’ teagaisg tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig.

[Denise MacColl] Uill, tha mi an dòchas gum bi mi a' teagaisg tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig fad na tìde, aig h-uile ìrean, chan ann dìreach anns an sgoil-àraich far a bheil mi a-nis, ach aig ìrean tron bhun-sgoil.

[Dàibhidh Eyre – Neach-aithris] Dàibhidh Eyre, BBC An Là, Dùn Èideann.

Gaelic immersion course for teachers

English Beurla

[Innes Munro - Presenter] Usually, teachers teach other people, but last week, it was the teachers who were learning. And a group of them visited Edinburgh University to take part in a Gaelic immersion course. As David Eyre reports, it is expected that they will return to the university soon to further develop their Gaelic. But will they be able to teach through the medium of Gaelic?

[David Eyre – Reporter] Teachers having a coffee and chatting to each other in Gaelic. But this is not a Gaelic school and most of these teachers do not teach through the medium of the language. However, they have all learned Gaelic to an advanced level and they are now doing an immersion course at the Celtic Department at Edinburgh University. A chance for them to develop their skills.

[Denise MacColl] I teach at Onthank Primary School in Kilmarnock through the medium of Gaelic, but I’m an English teacher, really. Oh, I’m really happy to be on the course, it’s a really good opportunity to learn a lot of Gaelic with fluent teachers at a level for adults. It is very important and useful for me.

[David Eyre – Reporter] The immersion course is a first step for these teachers. They expect that that will all return in August to do a course which lasts a school-year, it’s name is GIFT, Gaelic Immersion for Teachers. It was created with Edinburgh University and Strathclyde University as an attempt to employ more teachers to teach through the medium of Gaelic.

[Prof. Wilson MacLeòid] Well, it’s a week-long course for teachers, but this this connected to a longer course that we are doing between Edinburgh University and Strathclyde University to give teachers from an intermediate level in Gaelic and take them, we hope, to fluency, the intention is that they will teach through Gaelic at the end.

[Prof. Wilson MacLeòid] It’s clear that not enough are coming through the normal routed, university steps, courses that are there already and this is a new path for teachers who already work, but need more help and skills on the language itself.

[David Eyre – Reporter] As long as they were here, the teachers got a chance to speak Gaelic with many of the Gaelic groups, Stòrlann and Comann na Gàidhlig who give help and advice to teachers, both in and outside of school.

[Tara Rankin] I’m just here to show teachers that there is help, inside the school, to give help with school clubs and work, homework clubs and sradagan clubs, new prizes and things like that to create opportunities for children to speak Gaelic outside of the class.

[David Eyre – Reporter] And it was clear that there was a strong desire for these teachers to teach through the medium of Gaelic.

[Denise MacColl] Well, I hope I teach through the medium of Gaelic all of the time, at every stage, not just in the nursery where I am now, but at levels in the primary school.

[David Eyre – Reporter] David Eyre, BBC An Là, Edinburgh.
