The University of the Highlands and Islands' decision
[Innes Munro - Presenter] It is not who owns estates in the Highlands that is important, but how they are run. That is the findings of five year research which was done by the University of the Highlands and Islands. They recommend new co-operative structures between the landowners and the communities to make sure that the land which will serve them all well. But, there is controversy about the research as it was a wealthy landowner who paid for it. Donald Morrison reports.
[Donald Morrison – Reporter] The high land of Scotland is now seen as more important to the country than it ever was. It impacts on agriculture, tourism, hobbies, the environment, renewable energy and many other things. The question that was on the Mountain Research Centre that is based in Perth College of the UHI is what is the best way that will serve every one well.
[Donald Morrison – Reporter] The research does not show that it matters who has most of the land in Scotland, but the way that it is directed must change if our mountains remain strong.
[Donald Morrison – Reporter] This can be found in a book “Lairds, Lands and Sustainability”. The message is that a mix is missing; rich private landowners, community trusts and public bodies. But they recommend new co-operative models between the landowners and the community.
[Prof. Martin Price] I’m not sure we can say we need a particular kind of land ownership. I would say it’s how we manage the land, not to do things just thinking about the moment, but to take a long-term view and to make sure that all those involved actually have some recognition that they need to work together to achieve those long-term goals.
[Donald Morrison – Reporter] Professor Martin Price does not agree with campaigners who want to take the bog sports estates from rich landowners. He says that it is the private money from abroad that often keeps them going, money that the community does not have to spend on their estates.
