Celebrating Margaret Faye Shaw

[Iain MacInnes - Presenter] Now, the life of Margaret Faye Shaw and the collection of Gaelic songs she made are being celebrated in a piece of musical drama. The ‘Little Bird of Canna’ will be shown in many areas by the National Theatre of Scotland and through the Blas festival. Our Shona MacDonald got a chance to experience what was ahead of the audience and information on why it was important.

[Paul MacCallum] That is what is important about musical dramas like this. That it is the truth that is put across. As it was awful important the work that she did. She protected heritage and music, history and prayers and songs of the people and she recorded them as they gave them to her.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Sections of the autobiography of the life of Margaret, letters, personal pictures and film clips of life on the Island have been used for the music drama.

[Fiona MacDonald] I was looking for good examples of the sort of different styles and songs, the singers were different and the songs light and deeper songs and songs with stories just doing a sort of picture of life in Uist and Canna too.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The drama will go all over the Highlands, but it will start and end in the Islands that were closest to Margaret’s heart.

[Fiona MacDonald] We are starting in Uist and there isn’t another place where we should start, but here, where Margaret got her songs, where Margaret got the language and where Margaret got her family. And I am sure that everyone will be listening, really closely, with the songs and the words.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] And the music has an important use of its own right.

[Donald Shaw] We wanted to have instrumentation that reflected Margaret Faye Shaw’s love of other forms of music, like jazz and classical music and also her love of the piano, which was a big deal.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] It was a chance for the musicians to get to know Margaret’s work.

[Innes Whyte] I did not know how big the store was that she left for us as I had heard of Margaret before this, but I did not know the number of songs she had.
