Bliadhna on a bhàsaich Maighstir Calum MacIllFhaolain

[Iain MacIlleathain - Preseantair] Air an taobh eile do chabhsair Èirisgeigh, an-dè bhathas a’ comharrachadh bliadhna bho chaochail Maighstear Calum MacIllFhaolainn. Chaidh àrach air an Eilean agus bha e na shagart ann suas gu mhìle ‘s a h-aon. Bha mu cheud gu leth duine aig an aifreann anns an deach ìomhaigh de Naomh Mìcheal a bheannachadh, mar chuimhneachan air Maighstear Calum. Bha Andreas Wolff ann dhuinne.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] An-dè chaidh a chomharrachadh gu bheil bliadhna ann bhon a bhàsaich Maighstir Calum MacIllFhaolain a bhuineadh do dh’ Èirisgeigh. Rugadh e ann an naoi ceud deug fichead ‘s a sia ann an Glaschu, ach thill an teaghlach dhan Eilean far an deach e dhan sgoil. Bha e na shagart fad cha mhòr leth-cheud bliadhna, mu dheireadh ann an Èirisgeigh fhèin.

[Niall Dòmhnallach] Duine uabhasach laghach. Duine gasta, beannaichte, spioradail agus, ann an iomadh dòigh, bha e gu math traidiseanta cuideachd. Bha a dhòighean fhèin aige air rudan a dhèanamh. Duine a bha math air Gàidhlig, ‘s bhiodh e daonnan a’ brosnachadh na Gàidhlig, bhiodh na seirbheisean aige sa Ghàidhlig, na h-aifreann aige sa Ghàidhlig. Duine air an robh gàire air aodann fad na h-ùine.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Bha Maighstir Calum na shagart ann an diofar àiteachan air feadh nan Eilean agus air tìr-mòr, ach bha cuideachd gu mòr an-sàs ann an obair na coimhearsnachd. Chaidh a thaghadh mar chomhairliche nuair a chruthaichear Comhairle nan Eilean Siar an toiseach. Agus chaidh a dhèanamh nan iar fhear-gairm cuideachd.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Bhon a leig Maighstear Calum dheth a dhreuchd, cha robh sagart stèidhichte air an Eilean tuilleadh agus tha a’ pharaiste a-nis air a fhrithealadh à Dalabrog. Ach bha Maighstir Calum fhathast a’ fuireach ri taobh na h-Eaglaise gus na bhàsaich e an-uiridh.

[Pàdraig Foirbheis] Tha e gu math doirbh, gu math doirbh. Bha sinn a-riamh …gun robh sagart againne an seo …agus am biodh e doirbh dhomh a ràdh on a dh’ fhàg Maighstir Calum an dreuchd bhuaithe, saoilidh mi gun robh cùisean gu math na bu troma air on a dh’fhàg e an dreuchd.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Bha mu cheud gu leth do luchd-leantainn agus sagartan bho air feadh na sgìre Easbaig an làthair aig an aifreann agus chaidh ìomhaigh de Naomh Mìcheal a bheannachadh cuideachd.

[Mgr Dòmhnall MacAoidh] Nise, tha boireannach anns a’ pharaiste, chaidh i eadar seo agus Lunnainn, agus bidh i a’ dèanamh sculptures agus dh’ iarr Maighstir Calum oirre ìomhaigh a dhèanamh de Naomh Mìcheal. ‘S ann fo chùram a tha am paraiste againne ann an seo ann an Èirisgeigh agus tha an ìomhaigh sin a-nis air mullach post a’ gheata. Tha i againne, mar chuimhneachan cuideachd air Maighstir Calum fhèin.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Bha Maighstir Calum cuideachd ag iomairt gus cabhsair fhaotainn do dh’ Èirisgeigh, rud a fhuair iad ann an mhìle ‘s a h-aon. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là, Èirisgeigh.

A year since Fr Calum MacLennan died

[Iain MacLean - Presenter] On the other side of the Eriskay, yesterday they commemorated a year since Father Calum MacLennan died. He was raised on the island and he was a priest right up to 2001. About 150 people were at the mass where an image of Saint Michael, as a memorial of Father Calum was blessed. Andreas Wolff was there for us.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] Yesterday, a year was commemorated since Father Calum MacLennan, who came from Eriskay, died. He was born in 1926 in Glasgow, but the family returned to the island when he went to school. He was a priest for more than fifty years, in the end in Eriskay itself.

[Neil MacDonald] An awful nice man. An excellent man, blessed, spiritual and in every way, he was very traditional too. He had his own ways of doing things. A man who was good at Gaelic, he was always championing Gaelic, his services were in Gaelic, his mass was in Gaelic. A man who had a smile on his face all the time.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] Father Calum was a priest in different places all over the islands and the mainland, but he was heavily involved in community work. He was voted as a councillor when Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) was first created. And he was a spokesperson too.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] Since Father Calum left his job, there has not been a priest based on the island anymore and the parish is now served by Dalabroig. But, Father Calum still lived beside the church until he died last year.

[Peter Forbes] It is very hard, very hard. We always… had a priest here … and it would be difficult to say since Father Calum left his job, I think things were harder for him since he left his job.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] About one hundred and fifty people and priests from all over the dioceses were present and an image of St Michael was blessed too.

[Fr Donald MacKay] Now there is a woman in the parish, she is between here and London, and she does sculptures and Father Calum asked her to do an image of St Michael. She is under the protection of our parish here in Eriskay and that image is now on top of a gatepost. We have it as a memorial too of Father Calum himself.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] Father Calum also campaigned to get a causeway for Eriskay, something that happened in 2001. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là, Eriskay.
