New resoures for science through the medium of Gaelic
[Innes Munro - Presenter] New resources for teaching science through the medium of Gaelic were launched today by the group Stòrlann. With teachers and schoolchildren gathering at the Glasgow Science Centre to see the teaching materials for themselves. The books, posters and online resources have been designed for pupils in Primary 7 and First and Second Year of Secondary School. Caitriana Deeprose was at the launch.
[Caitriana Deeprose – Reporter] A day off school for pupils at Glasgow Gaelic School. The new resources for science were published by Stòrlann for schoolchildren in Primary 7 and First and Second Year of Secondary School. Something that was welcomed by teachers.
[Murdo Beaton] Well, I think it is a really good resource. When I first started teaching Science through the medium of Gaelic, I had to create my own material and this is really good and it is really good, I think, in many ways. Not only is the science good and correct. But the Gaelic is simple, it is easy to understand and I think that teachers and pupils will make great use of these resources.
[Caitriana Deeprose – Reporter] Books, posters and online material are all available and they were enjoyed by the pupils who were present.
[Boy] Now, we have this and it’ll be easier to teach Science in Gaelic.
[Girl] It looks awfully good, it looks interesting and great fun.
[Caitriana Deeprose – Reporter] Stòrlann have been working on these resources over two years and it took a long time deciding on vocabulary that would be appropriate.
[Donald Morrison] You have to be really careful that the vocabulary is correct and the panel that have been working for Stòrlann on vocabulary, Science vocabulary, and that is really appropriate as it means that the vocabulary has, to a level, been agreed and there will be consistency then between the vocabulary that is used over all the material and that is where the greatest care has been taken, to ensure that the vocabulary is correct.
