Chaidh na litrichean sgrìobhte le buill chumhachdach anns a’ phàrtaidh Libearalach aig deireadh na naoidheamh Linn deug a lorg ann an seann phreas. Seo Calum MacIlleathain.

Chaidh an sgrìobhadh le luchd-poilitigs leithid Eòsaph Chamberlain, athair a’ phrìomhaire Neville Chamberlain.

[Gòrdon Pire] We’ve never had anything like it before. I mean we’ve had somebody sent an email from America, that’s the furthest out. It has opened it up to a different clientele, I would say. And having said that I would imagine that some of the locals will have a punt at it as well.

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Chaidh na litrichean a sgrìobhadh dha Francis Schnadhorst, a bha na rùnaire air Caidreachas Nàiseanta nan Libearalach aig an àm. Tha iad a’ bruidhinn air an sgaradh a thàinig sa Phàrtaidh Libearalach air cuspair riaghlaidh dachaigh na h-Èirinn.

[Gòrdon Pire] Dear Mr Schnadhorst, Chamberlain sent me a letter to be read at the St James Hall meeting. In it, he said that he would only vote for second party if WEG accepted his modifications.

[Murchadh MacLeòid] Tha fios againne gun robh sradagan a’ dol anns a’ Phàrtaidh Libearalach aig an àm, gun robh argamaid mhòr ann agus tha fios againne ann an Eachdraidh gun do sgar am pàrtaidh aig a’ cheann thall. ‘S e a tha inntinnich an seo gun robh mar gum biodh oidhirpean a’ dol air cùl nan dorsan dùinte ag ràdh “Feuch am poileasaidh a tha seo atharrachadh mus dèan e a’ chùis air a’ phàrtaidh uile gu lèir, tha sin inntinneach ann fhèin.”

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Dìreach mar a tha teicneòlas ag atharrachadh ann an sgrìobhadh le barrachd a’ cleachdadh post-d seach a bhith sgrìobhadh litrichean, faodaidh daoine gach ceàrnaidh tagradh a chur a-steach don rup tron eadar-lìon.

[Calum MacIlleathain – Neach-aithris] Mar as trice, ‘s e rudan leithid seann leabhraichean agus seithrichean a tha iad a' reic aig an rup seo, ach tha ùidh anns na litrichean seo air nochdadh bho air feadh an t-saoghail, ‘s chan eil fhios fhathast, chosgas iad. Letters from a turbulant time in an auction in Elgin

English Beurla

[Angela MacLean - Presenter] A collection of old letters which were written at a turbulent time in politics will be for sale at auction in Elgin next week. The letters were written by powerful members of the Liberal party at the end of the Nineteenth Century were found in an old cupboard, Here’s Calum MacLean

[Calum MacLean – Reporter] Forty-four letters were written between 1882 and 1886 found in a filing cabinet in Aberdeenshire. They were written by politicians like Joseph Chamberlain, father of the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

[Gordon Pire] We’ve never had anything like it before. I mean we’ve had somebody sent an email from America, that’s the furthest out. It has opened it up to a different clientele, I would say. And having said that I would imagine that some of the locals will have a punt at it as well.

[Calum MacLean – Reporter] The letters were written to Francis Schnadhorst, who was the leader of the National Liberal Federation at that time. The talk about the split that occurred in the Liberal Party on the matter of home rule in Ireland.

[Gordon Pire]Dear Mr Schnadhorst, Chamberlain sent me a letter to be read at the St James Hall meeting. In it, he said that he would only vote for second party if WEG accepted his modifications.

[Murdo MacLeod] We know that sparks were occurring in the Liberal Party at the time, that there was a big argument and we know that in history the split in the party at the end. I’s interesting that there were efforts going behind the scenes saying “Try to change this policy before it ruins the party”. That’s interesting in itself.

[Calum MacLean – Reporter] Just as technology is changing in writing with more using email instead of sending letters, people can go to every corner of the globe to make a claim, instead of going to the auction, on the internet.

[Calum MacLean – Reporter] More often than not, it’s things like old books and chairs that you get at this auction, but the interest in the letters has come from all over the world, and it’s not known yet, what it will cost. Calum MacLean, BBC An Là, Elgin.
