[Iain MacEanraig] That is the plan, we are hoping to encourage the youth to come and maybe take this on and do it as a profession, you know just acquire the machine and, we will support them and give them all the technical back up that they require and hopefully keep the traditions going.

A machine that cuts peats
[Angela MacLean - Presenter] There’s been many a sore back at the peats, but for those who are still at it and those who will come to it, there could be a new way to cut the peats. A man from Lewis has designed a machine that will cut peats in the shape of a stack cut by a traditional knife, but faster and easier. He is willing to train people to use the machine, or to cut the peat himself. Our reporter, angus MacDonald spent a day at the peats.
[Angus MacDonald - Reporter] We all know the knife that is used to cut the peats, but it would take you a long time to do this. Today we are going to look at a new way.
[Angus MacDonald - Reporter] John Henderson has created a new machine that cuts peat in the old way, but it is the digger that is doing the hard work and it leaves the peats standing just like you had done the first stacks.
[John Henderson] Well it works using the digger, now we have a turfing bucket for cutting the turf, and then a peat-cutting bucket for cutting the peats and it’s all done mechanically, all done with hydraulics.
[Angus MacDonald - Reporter] It firsts takes the turf from the peat with another bucket and the then puts the peats inside as is usual. This leaves a perfect circle, without a cutter in sight.
[John Henderson] Well we’ve been thinking about it for quite a few years because it’s such back breaking work you know, it’s hard going on us, and that is what spurred us on and a couple of years in the development and this is doing it for real.
