Breabadairean nan Eilean Siar air pròiseact ùr a chur air bhonn

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Màiri Rodgers – Preseantair] Tha breabadairean nan Eilean Siar air pròiseact ùr a chur air bhonn a tha iad an dòchas a bheir spionnadh dhan ghnìomhachas. Ged a tha iad air adhartas fhaicinn sna beagan bhliadhnaichean a dh'fhalbh, tha na breabadairean a-niste a' gearain mu chomasan nan seann bheairtean agus, gu sònraichte, an duilgheadas a th' ann a bhith lorg pàirtean ùra. Tha an aithris seo aig Murray Macleòid.

[Murray MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Tha gnìomhachas a' Chlò Hearaich nas trainge na tha e air a bhith o chionn fhada. Le margaidhean ùra a' fosgladh air feadh an t-saoghail, tha breabadairean an-diugh an ìre mhath air an cumail a' dol. Ach anns an adhartas tha duilgheadas.

[Morris Mac Ille Dhuibh - Comann nam Breabadairean] To my mind the loom has never been fully developed from the time it was actually introduced into the industry. Over the years, all the weavers have gotten used to working with the loom. However, the faults are still there.

[Murray MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Le taic-airgid bho LEADER agus HIE, tha Comann nam Breabadairean a-nis a' lorg oifigear-leasachaidh pàirt-ùine a dhèiligeas le bhith faighinn pàirtean ùra dha na beairtean agus a' rannsachadh dòighean air na beairtean fhèin a leasachadh, agus tha cothrom ann a rèir an fheadhainn aig a bheil fios.

[Morris Mac Ille Dhuibh - Comann nam Breabadairean] Over the period, what we're looking to do is look at a more sustainable approach for the weavers and that would be that if … we're all sitting at roughly round about two tweeds a week just now, for roughly nine, ten months of the year. In your other two months, it's just going flat. But if we can make up the wage over the nine and ten months of the year, that covers the other down period, then it's going to be far better for any weavers coming into the industry especially.

[Murray MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Bidh an t-oifigear ùr stèidhichte ann an oifisean Ùghdarras a' Chlò Hearaich ann an Talla Baile Steòrnabhaigh agus tha iadsan a' faicinn gur e iomairt gu math iomchaidh a tha seo.

[Dòmhnall Màrtainn – Cathraiche, Ùghdarras a' Chlò Hearaich] Tha na beairtean a tha iad a' cleachdadh, a' bheairt mhòr, am Bonas-Griffiths, tha iad sin a-niste air a bhith ag obair aig na breabadairean airson còrr is fichead bliadhna agus tha rudan ag atharrachadh agus, mar sin, thathar a' toirt sùil mhionaideach an-dràsta, neach-rannsachaidh a' toirt sùil air as urrainnear a dhèanamh airson 's dòcha na beairtean a th' ann a dhèanamh nas èifeachdaiche, ach a bhith dèanamh cinnteach gu bheil iad ag obrachadh taobh a-staigh nan riaghailtean.

[Murray MacLeòid – Neach-aithris] Tha e follaiseach gu bheil an t-iarrtas airson aodach dhen t-seòrsa seo air sìor dhol am meud sa bhliadhna no dhà a dh'fhalbh. Ach tha e follaiseach cuideachd, a dh'aindeoin gach adhartais, gu bheil lagasidhean ann fhathast agus sin an rud a tha na breabadairean ag iarraidh dèiligeadh ris. Murray MacLeòid, BBC An Là, Steòrnabhagh.

The Western Isles' weavers have set up a project

English Beurla

[Mairi Rodgers – Presenter] Weavers in the Western Isles have initiated a new project which they hope will strengthen the industry. Although they have seen progress in the past few years, the weavers are now complaining about the capabilities of the old looms and, specifically, the difficulties involved in sourcing new parts. Murray MacLeod has this report.

[Murray MacLeod – Reporter] The Harris Tweed industry is busier than it has in for a long time. With new markets opening around the world, weavers are nowadays being kept quite busy. However with progression comes difficulty.

[Morris Black – Chair, Weavers Association] To my mind the loom has never been fully developed from the time it was actually introduced into the industry. Over the years, all the weavers have gotten used to working with the loom. However, the faults are still there.

[Murray MacLeod – Reporter] With financial support from LEADER and HIE, the Weavers Association is looking for a part-time development officer who will deal with sourcing new parts for the looms and researching ways in which to develop the actual looms, and according to experts there is an opportunity.

[Murray MacLeod – Reporter] The new officer will be based in the Harris Tweed Authority offices in Stornoway's Town Hall and they feel that this is a very appropriate initiative.

[Donald Martin – Chair, Harris Tweed Authority] The looms that they are using, the large looms, the Bonas-Griffiths, they have now been used by the weavers for over twenty years and things are changing and, as a result, things are being closely scrutinised, a researcher is looking into what can be done to make the current looms more effective, but at the same time making sure that they are working within regulations.

[Murray MacLeod – Reporter] It is evident that demand for this type of clothing has greatly increased over the past couple of years. However it is also obvious, despite developments, that there are still weaknesses and the weavers would like these to be dealt with. Murray MacLeod, BBC An Là, Stornoway.
