Dòmhall MacLachlainn às a’ Mhoirbheinn

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Dòmhnall Uilleam] Car coltach ris, ’s e bu choireach ach ministear, duine gu math neònach dom b’ ainm Dòmhall MacLachlainn às a’ Mhoirbheinn. Co-dhiù b’ e ministear Àird nam Murchan a bh’ ann agus tha e coltach nach robh a dhreuchd a’ còrdadh ris idir, idir, idir agus mar sin thog e air.

[Dòmhnall Uilleam] Chaidh e sìos a Lunnainn agus bha e a’ coimhead timcheall feuch ciamar a dhèanadh e airgead. Agus dè b’ fheàrr leis na suidhe sìos agus leabhran beag drabasta a sgrìobhadh dom b’ aimn ‘An Essay Upon the Improving and Adding to of the Wealth and Strength of Great Britain and Ireland through Fornication’. Agus chaidh a chlò-bhualadh cuideachd!

[Dòmhnall Uilleam] Co-dhiù, bha e cuideachd a’ coimhead airson barrachd airgid agus feumaidh gun cuala e gun robh trustees ann an Georgia, gun robh iad a’ coimhead airson dhaoine a dheigheadh a-null thairis agus a dhìon na dùthcha ud an aghaidh nan Spàinnteach mu dheas. Agus chuir e litir thuc’ agus tha e coltach gun robh e ag iarraidh gun toireadh iad airgead dhàsan ’s gun deigheadh iad, gun deigheadh e air ais chun na Gàidhealtachd agus gun trusadh e daoine agus gun cuireadh e sìos a Lunnainn iad agus gun deigheadh iad a-null thairis a Georgia.

[Dòmhnall] Tha Darien air bruthaichean Abhainn Altamaha, faisg air crìoch Florida. ’S e port iasgaich beag, sochair a th’ ann an-diugh ach bha e an uair ud air fìor iomall na h-ìompaireachd.

[Dòmhnall] A dh’aindeoin an t-sàir aig MacLachlainn ris an lagh, chaidh gabhail ri a phlana. Anns an Fhaoilleach seachd deug ’s a sia deug air fhichead ràinig a’ chiad bhuidheann dhiubh, ochd fichead ’s a seachd duine deug, a’ gabhail sealbh de na bha air fhàgail de ghearastan rìgh Gheorgia.

[Michael Sacrickson] It was virtually a hell on earth. The bugs had a tendency to drive them crazy – they had never known the like in Scotland. A British officer that was stationed here for a very short while said that he was three months at sea and could still here the infernal buzzing of the damned insects. Diseases that are no longer a problem in the United States ran rampant here, yellow fever, swamp fever, dysentery, even malaria and it plagued the highlanders from the start.

Donald MacLachlan from Morven

English Beurla

[Dòmhnall Uilleam] Likewise, it was a minister, a very strange man named Donald MacLachlan from Morven, that was to blame. Anyway he was Ardnamurchan’s minister and it appears that he didn’t enjoy his job at all, at all, at all and so he left.

[Dòmhnall Uilleam] He went down to London and he was looking around to try and work out how to make money. And what did he enjoy more than sitting down and writing a small obscene booklet named ‘An Essay Upon the Improving and Adding to of the Wealth and Strength of Great Britain and Ireland through Fornication’ And it was published too!

[Dòmhnall Uilleam] Anyway, he was also looking for more money and he must have heard that there were trustees in Georgia, that they were looking for people that would go abroad and protect that country against the Spanish in the south. And he sent a letter to them and it appears that he wanted them to give money to him and that he would go back to the Highlands and that he would gather people and that he would send them down to London and that they would go abroad to Georgia.

[Donald] Darien is on the banks of the Altamaha River, near Florida’s border. It is a small, quiet fishing port today but it was at that time on the very edge of the empire.

[Donald] Despite MacLachlan’s breach of the law, his plans were accepted. In January seventeen thirty six (1736) the first group of them arrived, ninety seven people, taking possession of what was left of King Georgia’s Fort.

[Michael Sacrickson] It was virtually a hell on earth. The bugs had a tendency to drive them crazy – they had never known the like in Scotland.
