[Preseantair] Aig deich mionaidean gu dà uair air madainn na Bliadhna Ùire naoi ceud deug ’s a naoi deug, thachair an tubaist mara a bu mhiosa a chunnacas ann an uisgeachan Bhreatainn.

[Mòr NicLeòid] Bha e mar gum biodh neart an Eilein air a thoirt air falbh.

[Preseantair] Chaidh an Iolaire le còrr ’s dà cheud ’s ochdad seòladair air an t-slighe dhachaigh às a’ Chogadh Mhòr air Biastan Thuilm. Chaill còrr ’s dà cheud duine am beatha.

[Ruairidh Moireach] Cia mheud teaghlach nach robh idir ann air sgàth na tubaist a bha seo?

[Preseantair] Chan eil mòran aithne air taobh a-muigh nan Eilean Siar.

The maritime disaster of the Iolaire

[Presenter] At ten minutes to two on new year’s morning 1919 the worse maritime disaster witnessed in British waters happened.

[Marion MacLeod] It was like the strength of the island was taken away.

[Presenter] The Iolaire with more than two hundred and eighty sailors on the way home from the Great War hit the Beasts of Holm. More than two hundred men lost their life.

[Roddy Murray] How many families were wiped out completely because of this accident?

[Presenter] There is not much awareness of it out with the Western Isles.

[John MacDonald] I believe it was, it was the most awful thing to happen in the Western Isles ever.
