Carbad nan iasg

[Preseantair] Aig aon àm ann am Bàgh a’ Chaisteil, bha uimhir de bhàtaichean ann ‘s gun b’ urrainn do dhuine coiseachd, bho aon ceann dhen Bhàgh dhan cheann eile gun cas a chur faisg air uisge.

[Preseantair] San latha an-diugh, chan eil ach dhà no trì bhàtaichean ag iasgach a-mach à Barraigh airson an sgadain, ‘s na h-iasgairean an seo mar a tha a’ mhòr-chuid de dh’ àiteachan eile a’ dèanamh am beò-shlàint ag iasgach a’ mhaoraich.

[Preseantair] Tha an t-àite seo a-nis a’ crochadh air am beagan sgadain a gheibh iad tighinn à margaidhean air tìr-mòr, ‘s gun ach duine no dithis a tha a’ reic an èisg air an Eilean.

[Raghnall Caimbeul] Tha mi cinnteach gu bheil an sgadan cho saor ri biadh a gheibh thu.

[Raghnall Caimbeul] On a bha sinn òg, cha robh ann ach rud a bhiodh thu ag ithe, chùm sinn ris cha chreid mi. Nuair a tha an sgadan agamsa sa bhan, bidh mi gu math nas trainge na nuair a bhios iasg geal agam, nam biodh agam ach iasg geal.

The fish van

[Presenter] At one time in Castlebay there was a number of boats and someone could walk from one end of the bay to another with without putting a foot on water.

[Presenter] Today, there is only two or three fishing out of Barra for herring and the fishermen here like many other areas make their living fishing for shellfish.

[Presenter] This place is now reliant on the little herring that comes from mainland markets, and there are only one or two people who sell the fish on the Island.

[Ronald Campbell] I’m sure that herring is as cheap a food as you will get. We cannot get enough of it. They’ll buy what we get. If it was easier to get, it would be better, there is not the numbers who fish in it that used to, and it’s harder to get.

[Raghnall Caimbeul] When we were you, it was only something that you ate so we kept at it. When I have herring in the van, I’m much busier than when I have white fish, if I only had white fish.
