Coinneach MacÌomhair a’ còmhradh ri Dòmhnall Moireasdan

[Dòmhnall] Coinneach MacÌomhair, craoladair, fear-naidheachd, comhairliche agus fear a bha ri iomadach rud eadar a bhith a' fighe chlòthan agus a' bogsadh. Coinneach Mòr, fear de charactaran saoghal na Gàidhlig. Fàilte ort, a Choinnich.

[Coinneach] Tapadh leatsa.

[Dòmhnall] ’S tusa fear de rionnagan mòra na Gàidhlig, nach tu?

[Coinneach] Mi?

[Dòmhnall] Tha mi ag ràdh siud air sgàth 's gu bheil fios agam nach toil leat a bhith ga chluinntinn, ach ’s tu. Cò ann an saoghal na Gàidhlig nach cuala mu Choinneach Mòr?

[Coinneach] Uill tha mi toilichte a chluinntinn gu bheil fheadhainn a-muigh an sin a tha a' cluinntinn sin agus gur math fada a mhaireas e.

[Dòmhnall] A bheil thu a' gabhail ris an siud?

[Coinneach] Chan eil.

[Dòmhnall] Carson? Uill tha fhios gum feum thu nad obair an ìomhaigh a tha sin fheuchainn ri thogail an àird. Bidh cuid agus bidh iad a' fastadh, bidh iad a' fastadh dotairean toinneimh airson sin a dhèanamh dhaibh.

[Coinneach] Uill bha mise eòlach gu leòr air “toinneamh”, ach ’s ann a bhiodh mo sheanair ga dhèanamh air a’ chuibhle-shnìomha thall ann am Bràgar. Bha mi eòlach cuideachd air a bhith a’ grèiseadh agus a’ breabadaireachd ach ’s e a tha sin ach sgeul eile. Tha mi a’ tuigsinn an diofar a tha eadar toinneamh agus susbaint. Chan eil e a’ dèanamh aon dragh sam bith dhomh. Chanadh iad rud a thogras iad, agus canaidh.

[Dòmhnall] Tha e a’ tighinn gu nàdarrach. Dè th’ annad? Dè an obair a th’ agad?

[Coinneach] Uill tha mi a’ feitheamh ri joba fhaighinn. ’S dòcha gu bheil e rudeigin anmoch a-nise. Uill tha mi a’ creid’ gur e an rud as motha a tha mi a’ dèanamh an-diugh, gur e craoladair a tha mi a’ creid a chanainn a th’ annam an-diugh, a thaobh mo chosnaidh co-dhiù, ach iomadach rud eile a tha mi fhathast a’ dèanamh agus a tha a’ còrdadh rium ’s tha e a’ toirt toileachas mòr dhomh a bhith ga dhèanamh ach ma tha thu a’ faighneachd dè th’ annam tha mi a’ creid’ gum feumainn gabhail ris gur e craoladair.

[Dòmhnall] ’S tha thu air a bhith nad fhear-naidheachd cuideachd nad dreuchd ’s iomadach rud mar a gheibh sinn a-mach mar a thèid sinn air adhart ach mar chraoladair, tha thu, tha ìomhaigh agad agus chan eil duine a-nis a’ faighinn prògram rèidio dha fhèin a h-uile madainn. Dè cho fad ’s a tha e air a bhith a’ dol a-nis, Prògram Choinnich?

[Coinneach] Tha am prògram seo air a bhith a’ dol seachd bliadhna deug ’s tha mi air còrr ’s ceithir mìle dhiubh a dhèanamh.

[Dòmhnall] Chan eil duine a’ faighinn an ruith a tha sin gun rudeigin a bhith mu dheidhinn, rudeigin na ìomhaigh a tha a’ toirt air daoine a ràdh “uill siud an duine airson a bhith a’ dèanamh seo”. Saoil dè th’ ann?

[Coinneach] Uill chan eil càil a dh’fhios agamsa! ’S mise an duine ceàrr airson a bhith a’ faighneachd sin dha. Tha mise an nì a bha ’s an nì a tha ’s an nì a tha mi an dòcha a bhios mi. Tha mi a’ smaoineachadh gur e an rud a th’ ann gu bheil thu a’ feuchainn ri thu fhèin a chur ann an suidheachadh nàdarrach ’s ga do dhèanamh fhèin nàdarrach ann an suidheachadh a tha mì-nàdarrach gu math tric.

Chaidh am prògram seo, Thuige Seo, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2011.

Kenny MacIver in conversation with Donald Morrison

[Donald] Kenny MacIver, broadcaster, journalist, councillor and a man did lots of things amongst weaving cloth and boxing. Coinneach Mòr (Big Kenny), one of the Gaelic world’s characters. Welcome to you, Kenny.

[Kenny] Thank you.

[Donald] You are one of the great stars of Gaelic, aren’t you?

[Kenny] Me?

[Donald] I am saying that because I know that you don’t like to hear it, but you are. Who in the Gaelic world hasn’t heard about Coinneach Mòr (Big Kenny)?

[Kenny] Well I am happy to hear that there are folks out there that hear that and long may it last.

[Donald] Do you accept that?

[Kenny] No.

[Donald] Why? Well surely in your profession you must try to raise that profile. There are some people and they employ, they employ spin doctors to do that for them.

[Kenny] Well I was fairly acquainted with “spinning”, but it was what my grandfather did on a spinning-wheel over in Bragar. I also know about embroidering and weaving but that is another story. I understand the difference between spin and substance. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. They could say what they please, and they do.

[Donald] It comes naturally. What are you? What is your job?

[Kenny] Well I am waiting to get a job. Perhaps it is somewhat late now. Well I think that the biggest thing that I do today is, I think that I would say that today I am a broadcaster, with regards my employment anyway, but there are many other things that I still do and that I enjoy and it gives me great pleasure to do it but if you are asking what I am I think then I would need to accept that it is a broadcaster.

[Donald] And you have also been a journalist in your career and many’s a thing as we will find out as we go along but as a broadcaster, you are, you have a profile and nobody now gets a radio programme to himself every morning. How long has it been going now, Prògam Choinnich?

[Kenny] This programme has been going for seventeen years and I have done more than four thousand of them.

[Donald] Nobody gets that run without something about them, something in their profile that makes people say “well that is the man to do this.” I wonder what it is?

[Kenny] Well I have no idea! I am the wrong person to ask that of. I am the thing that I was and the thing that I am and the thing that I hope to be. I think that what it is is that you try to put yourself in a natural situation and make yourself natural in a situation that is very often unnatural.

This programme, Thuige Seo, was first broadcast in 2011.
