Leabhar as toigh le Catrìona

[Anna] A’ chiad leabhar a tha thusa air taghadh dhuinn a-nochd ’s e saoghal gu math eadar-dhealaichte bho Ghabhsann a th’ ann. Dè an leabhar a th’ ann agus carson a thagh thu e?

[Catrìona] A’ chiad leabhar a thog mise ’s e To Kill A Mocking Bird. Seo leabhar a sgrìobh Harper Lee agus sgrìobh i an leabhar anns na, uill thàinig e a-mach ann an naoi ceud deug agus seasgad ’s a h-aon, ach tha e suidhichte anns na trìtheadan, dìreach ron chogadh agus tha ceangal anns an leabhar dìreach gu bheil rudan a’ tachairt anns an Roinn Eòrpa. Agus ’s e an t-adhbhar gun do leugh mi an leabhar seo, chaidh mi tron sgoil agus cha do leugh mi e a-riamh agus leugh an nighean agam e, tha mi cinnteach nuair a bha i a’ dèanamh Beurla anns an sgoil, ’s mathaid aig àrd-ìre, chan eil mi cinnteach, agus bha i a’ bruidhinn mu dheidhinn an leabhair agus bha mise a’ cantainn “uill feumaidh mise an leabhar seo a leughadh dhomh fhìn”. Agus ’s e rud a bhios sinne a’ dèanamh anns an teaghlach ach bidh sinn ga leughadh agus an uair sin bidh sinn a’ bruidhinn mu dheidhinn, beagan coltach ris mar a tha sinn an-dràsta.

[Gilleasbaig] Club leabhraichean.

[Catrìona] Club leabhraichean anns an teaghlach againn fhìn.

[Gilleasbaig] Sin math.

[Catrìona] Agus sin a thug orm a leughadh agus dìreach chòrd e rium gu mòr. Tha mi a’ smaoineachainn gur e an rud a chòrd rium mu dheidhinn dìreach tha an dòigh anns a bheil e air a sgrìobhadh tro shùilean nighinn òig a tha ochd bliadhna a dh’aois nach eil a’ tuigsinn an t-saoghail anns a bheil i. Chan eil i a’ tuigsinn carson a tha na h-inbhich a’ dèanamh an rud a tha iad a’ dèanamh. Tha i a’ fàs suas ann am Maycomb County anns na Stàitean Aonaichte agus ’s e fear-lagha a tha na h-athair agus tha a màthair air bàsachadh ’s tha i beò còmhla ri a bràthair. ’S e beagan de thomboy a th’ innte-se agus ’s caomh leatha a bhith a-muigh ’s a’ dol mun chuairt. Tha a h-athair na fhear-lagha agus tha e air case fhaighinn de dhuine dubh a tha air ionnsaigh a thoirt air boireannach geal agus tha i a’ tuigsinn, mar a tha cùisean a' dol air adhart, mar a tha beachdan dhaoine dìreach a’ smaoineachainn gu bheil an duine seo ciontach gun fiù ’s, fhios agad, cothrom a thoirt dha a sgeul innse. Agus tha i a’ faicinn an gràin-cinnidh a tha a’ dol air adhart aig an àm sin leis na daoine geala agus leis na daoine dubha agus chan eil ise ga thuigsinn agus tha mi a’ smaoineachainn gu bheil an leabhar cho sìmplidh ri sin. Nuair a sheallas tu tro shùilean an leanaibh, chan eil duine a’ tuigsinn carson a tha na daoine geala a’ faighinn, a’ sealltainn riutha ann an dòigh eadar-dhealaichte.

Chaidh am prògram seo, Leugh Mi, a chraoladh an toiseach ann an 2015.

A book that Catriona likes

[Anne] The first book that you have chosen for us tonight it is a very different world from Galson. What book is it and why did you choose it?

[Catriona] The first book that I chose is To Kill A Mocking Bird. This is a book that Harper Lee wrote and she wrote the book in the, well it was published in nineteen seventy one, but it is set in the thirties, just before the war and there is a link in the book just that things are happening in Europe. And the reason that I read this book is, I went through school and I never read it and my daughter read it, I am sure when she was doing English in school, perhaps at higher level, I am not sure, and she was speaking about the book and I say “well I must read this book for myself”. And the thing that we do in the family is we read it and then we speak about it, a little like we are just now.

[Gilleasbaig] A book club.

[Catriona] A book club in our own family.

[Gilleasbaig] That’s good.

[Catriona] And that is what made me read it and just I really enjoyed it. I think that the thing that I enjoyed about it is just the way in which it is written through the eyes of a young girl who is eight years old and that doesn’t understand the world in which she is in. She doesn’t understand why the adults are doing what they are doing. She grows up in Maycomb County in the United States and she father is a lawyer and her mother has died and she lives with her brother. She is a bit of a tomboy and she likes being out and about. Her father is a lawyer and he has got a case about a black man that has attacked a white woman and she understands, as matters progress, how people’s opinions just think that this man is guilty without even, you know, giving him an opportunity to tell his story. And she sees the racism that is taking place at that time with the white peope and with the black people and she doesn’t understand it and I think that the book is as simple as that. When you look through a child’s eyes, nobody understand why the white people get, viewing them in a different way.

This programme, Leugh Mi, was first broadcast in 2015.
