Little by Little Beag air Bheag

Beginners (A1)- Unit 25 - Television and radio
Luchd-tòiseachaidh (A1) - Aonad 25 - Telebhisean is rèidio

Introduction

Telebhisean is rèidio

Television and radio

Television and radio are international words which are very similar in many languages, and Gaelic is no exception. So they’re easy to remember! This unit will allow you to converse a little about programmes you like or don’t like on both media.

We hope that you already watch Gaelic programmes on the television and that you will soon be listening to BBC Radio nan Gaidheal!

Conversation 1

In Conversation 1 you can hear Seònaid and Iain talking about where they watch television, and what they like to watch on it.

Conversation 1

Listen to the conversation:

Seònaid:
A bheil telebhisean agad?
Do you have a television?
Iain:
Tha. Tha dà thelebhisean agam.
Yes. I have two televisions.
Seònaid:
Carson a tha dà thelebhisean agad?
Why do you have two televisions?
Iain:
Tha fear agam aig an teine.
I have one in the living room [literally, at the fire]
Seònaid:
Agus càite a bheil am fear eile? Anns an taigh-bheag?
And where is the other one? In the toilet?
Iain:
Chan eil – ged a tha rèidio agam anns an taigh-bheag.
No – although I have a radio in the toilet.
Seònaid:
Càite a bheil am fear eile, ma-thà?
Where is the other one, then?
Iain:
Tha e nam rùm-chadail.
It is in my bedroom.
Seònaid:
Ist! Am bi thu a’ coimhead telebhisean anns an leabaidh?
Be quiet. Do you watch television in [the] bed?
Iain:
Bithidh aig amannan. A bheil càil ceàrr air sin?
I do at times. Is there anything wrong with that?
Seònaid:
Chan eil, ma tha e a’ còrdadh riut…
No, if you enjoy it….
Iain:
Nach bi thu fhèin a’ coimhead telebhisean?
Don’t you watch television yourself?
Seònaid:
Bithidh, ach cha bhi anns an leabaidh.
Yes, but not in bed.
Iain:
Dè am prògram as fheàrr leat?
What is your favourite programme?
Seònaid:
Chan eil fhios agam. Na naidheachdan, ’s dòcha.
I don’t know. The news, probably.
Iain:
Ach uaireannan tha na naidheachdan uabhasach dòrainneach.
But sometimes the news are terribly depressing.
Seònaid:
Tha. Ach ’s e sin an saoghal dhut.
Yes. But that’s the world for you.
Iain:
’S fheàrr leamsa prògraman èibhinn.
I prefer funny programmes.
Seònaid:
An toigh leat filmichean?
Do you like films?
Iain:
Tha filmichean math fhèin!
Films are great!
Seònaid:
Dè am film a b’ fheàrr a chunnaic thu a-riamh?
What was the best film you ever saw?
Iain:
Mmm, tha sin doirbh.
Mmm, that’s difficult.
Seònaid:
Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings?
Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings?
Iain:
A bheil fhios agad air seo – ’s e seann film as fheàrr leam.
Do you know this – my favourite is an old film.
Seònaid:
Cò fear?
Which one?
Iain:
Gone with the Wind. Bha e air an telebhisean an-uiridh.
Gone with the Wind. It was on television last year.
Seònaid:
’S e seann fhear as fheàrr leamsa cuideachd.
My favourite is an old one too.
Iain:
Cò fear?
Which one?
Seònaid:
To Kill a Mocking Bird. Bha sin air an telebhisean am-bliadhna.
To Kill a Mocking Bird. That was on television this year.

This is the end of Unit 25. Remember that you can test yourself to see how much you’ve learnt.

Mar sin leibh an-dràsta!

Cèitidh:
Cò ris a tha thu ag èisteachd?

Alasdair:
Is toigh leam Coinneach. Tha deagh phrògram aige.
I like Kenny. He has a good programme.
Cèitidh:
Tha e math gun teagamh. Dè na prògraman eile as toigh leat?
He is good without doubt. What other programmes do you like?

On radio or on television?
Cèitidh:
Air an rèidio.
On radio.
Alasdair:
Uill, bidh mi ag èisteachd ri prògram nan Dùrachdan.
Well, I listen to the request programme.

Alasdair:
Cuin a tha sin air?
When is that on?
Cèitidh:
A h-uile madainn ach Disathairne is Didòmhnaich.
Every morning except Saturday and Sunday.
Alasdair:
Am bi thu ag èisteachd ri prògraman Beurla cuideachd?
Do you listen to English-language programmes also?
Cèitidh:
Bithidh. Is toigh leam èisteachd ri ball-coise.
Yes. I like listening to the football.
Alasdair:
An toigh leat prògraman ciùil?
Do you like music programmes?
Cèitidh:

Yes at times. But I play CDs as well.
Alasdair:
Dè as fheàrr leat – rèidio no telebhisean?
What do you prefer – radio or television?
Cèitidh:
’S e rèidio as fheàrr leam. Ach tha telebhisean agam cuideachd.
It’s radio I prefer. But I have a television as well.
Alasdair:
Tha na dealbhan nas fheàrr air an telebhisean.
The pictures are better on television.
Cèitidh:
Ach tha an còmhradh nas fheàrr air an rèidio.
But the conversation is better on radio.
Alasdair:
Tha sin fìor.
That’s true.
