Stòras Uibhist 10 bliadhna a dh'aois

[Angela NicIlleathain – Preseantair] Deich bliadhna air ais chaidh an oighreachd choimhearsnachd as motha ann an Alba a cheannach - oighreachd Uibhist a Deas. Anns na deich bliadhna bhon uairsin chaidh pròiseactan mòra a choileanadh agus tha obraichean agus luach na h-oighreachd air a dhol am meud. Ach mar a tha Shona NicDhòmhnaill ag aithris, tha gu leòr ri dhèanamh fhathast.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Anns an Dùbhlachd 2006, an dèidh iomairt a mhair còrr agus trì bliadhna, fhuair a’ choimhearsnachd air oighreachd Uibhist a Deas sealbh air an fhearann aca fhèin. Disathairne chomharraich Stòras Uibhist na deich bliadhna bhon uair sin le latha coimhearsnachd anns an Ìochdar.

[Aonghas MacIlleMhaoil] Aig an àm ’s e an rud bu duilghe ’s e dìreach faighneachd dhut fhèin agus dhan t-shluagh agus muinntir an àite, ghabhadh dèanamh agus an robh e a’ coimhead freagarrachd gun gabhadh e dèanamh air dhòigh sam bith.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Chosg an oighreachd £4.5millean not aig an àm. A-nis an dèidh pròiseactan mòra, mar an tuath gaoithe ann an Loch a’ Charnain, agus caladh ùr ann an Loch Baghasdail a thogail, tha luach de chòrr is 30 millean air a chur air.

[Aonghas MacIlleMhaoil] Uill chanainn-sa gur e an rud as motha, tha misneachd aig daoine a-nis, gun tig aca ri coimhead air gnìomhachas a chur air adhart. Gun tig aca, tha mi’n dòchas, ri coimhead air fuireach anns na h-eileanan a tha seo an àite dìreach a h-uile duine a bhith tarraing, mar a bha iad aig an àm.

[Alana NicAonghais] Bhithinn-sa gu math toilichte tilleadh air ais dhachaigh, nam biodh ’s dòcha barrachd obraichean a’ dol. Tha feadhainn de na caraidean agam air tilleadh air ais so bhithinn-sa toilichte gu leòr tilleadh.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Bha gearanan air an tilgeil air Stòras Uibhist bhon fhìor thoiseach agus tha gu leòr ri dhèanamh fhathast gus pròiseactan is soirbheachas a sgaoileadh air feadh Eirisgeigh, Uibhist a Deas is Beinn na Faoghla.

[Florence Mhoireasdan] Bidh tòrr a’ gearain, fhios agad nach do rinn thu sìon bhos san Ìochdar is Gèirinis. Chionns ’s e sinne tha coimhead air na turbines, chan e idir muinntir Loch Baghasdail. Ged a tha Loch Baghasdail, chaidh obair mhòr a dhèanamh ’s tha mi creidsinn gu robh e gu math feumach air. Cha b’ uilear dhuinn beagan airgid fhaighinn a bhos an taobh seo cuideachd.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Mar chomharra air a’ bhliadhna a fhuair a’ choimhearsnachd smachd air an fhearann, chaidh tiodhlaic a thoirt dhan h-uile duine cloinne a rugadh ann an 2006 agus a tha fuireach air an oighreachd an-diugh.

[Florence Mhoireasdan] An fheadhainn a tha tighinn às ar dèidh, tha mi glè chinnteach gum buannaich iad sin fhathast, as bith tha na turbines a’ dèanamh.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Cha robh ach aon dreuchd gu leth ann an oifis na h-oighreachd ann an 2006. An-diugh tha deichnear ag obair anns an oifis air mo chùlaibh an seo agus tha iad ri rianachd na h-oighreachd agus pròiseactan leasachaidh. Bidh dùil aig a’ choimhearsnachd ri tuilleadh adhartais anns na bliadhnaichean ri teachd. Shona NicDhòmhnaill, BBC An ann an Uibhist a Deas.

10th anniversary of Stòras Uibhist

[Angela MacLean – Presenter] Ten years ago the largest community estate in Scotland was bought – the South Uist estate. In the ten years since, large projects have been accomplished and the number of jobs and the value of the estate have increased. But as Shona MacDonald reports, there’s plenty to be done yet.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] In December 2006, after a campaign which lasted more than three years, the community were able to gain possession of their own land, the South Uist estate. On Saturday, Stòras Uibhist celebrated ten years since then with a community day in Iochdar.

[Angus MacMillan] At the time, the hardest thing was just asking yourself, the public and the people of the area, what would it take, did it seem achievable and could it be done in any way?

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] The estate cost £4.5 million at the time. Now after major projects, such as the wind farm in Loch Carnan and building the new pier in Lochboisdale, it’s value has increased by £30 million.

[Angus MacMillan] Well I would say the biggest thing is that people now have the confidence to create businesses. That they’ll, hopefully, look to stay on these islands rather than everyone fleeing, as they were at the time.

[Alana MacInnes] I would be quite happy to return home, if there were perhaps more jobs available. Some of my friends have returned so I would be happy enough to return.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Stòras Uibhist were faced with complaints from the very beginning and there’s plenty to be done yet in order to embark on projects and achieve success across Eriskay, South Uist and Benbecula.

[Florence Morrison] Many complain, you know, that nothing has been done over in Iochdar and Geirnis. Because, we who have to look at the turbines, not the people of Lochboisdale. Although there was a lot of work done in Lochboisdale, I believe it was very much required. We ought to have more over this way too though.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] To mark the year the community gained control over the land, a gift was given to each child who was born in 2006 and who lives on the estate today.

[Florence Morrison] The next generation, I’m quite sure that they will benefit from this yet, whatever it is the turbines do.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] There were only one and a half posts in the estate office in 2006. Today there are ten people working in the office behind me here, working on the administration of the estate and development projects. The community will hope for more progress in the years to come. Shona MacDonald, BBC An Là in South Uist.
