Unique music course reaches milestone
[Angela MacLean – Presenter] The first students of a unique music course will be graduating soon. The BA in music through The University of the Highlands and Islands is taught distance learning –allowing people to stay at home. They must meet up four times a year though. This week they’ve been in Stornoway. Eilidh MacLeod has this report.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] A Gaelic psalm singing lesson for some of the 82 students doing the BA in music through The University of the Highlands and Islands. There are students here from Newcastle to Shetland. The teaching is done online and through video conferencing. But they must meet up four times each year.
[Robbie Greig] The residencies provide a good opportunity to meet new people and meet others you’ve only seen on the VC, on the video conference, when you get your lectures.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] The first students will graduate this summer. It seems there aren’t any other courses like it in Britain, with regards to the subjects and how they are taught.
[Anna Wendy Stevenson] And I often mention Thomas Telford’s roads – he saw then as opening up the Highlands and Islands and in many ways what technology has enabled us to do is to open up the Highlands and Islands in terms of education and provide students the opportunity to stay at home and we don’t have this big drain of people leaving the Highlands and Islands to go to the central belt.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Many opt for a career as a professional musician but the stage isn’t for everybody, and this course prepares them for making a living out of music in various ways.
[Caitlinn Ross] I’m going to be recording an EP in summer so that will be good. And just a little bit of everything. I like teaching young children at Fèisean.
