Ionad Ath-chuairteachaidh a’ Ghrìde

[Angela NicIlleathain – Preseantair] Thathas ag iarraidh air muinntir nan Eilean Siar a bhith nas mothachaile air an sgudal a tha iad a’ tilgeil a-mach agus barrachd stuth ath-chuairteachadh. Tha 10 bliadhna ann bhon a dh’ fhosgail Ionad Ath-chuairteachaidh a’ Ghrìde air iomall Steòrnabhaigh. Tha iad a’ làimhseachadh mòran ann an sin ach dh’ fhaodadh iad barrachd a dhèanamh tha iad ag ràdh. Bidh iad ag ath-chuairteachadh iomadh rud bho phàipear, plastaig, glainne agus stuth organach. Seo Ruairidh Rothach.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] Robh sibh riamh a smaoineachadh tha tachairt dhan stuth tha dol a-steach dha na bionaichean uaine, glas agus gorm? Uill ann an Leòdhas agus Na Hearadh tha a’ mhòr-chuid dheth a’ tighinn an seo gu Ionad Ath-Chuairteachaidh a’ Ghrìde agus thèid e chur gu feum a-rithist. Fhuair mise cuireadh a dhol a-steach airson faicinn mar a tha cùisean ag obair ann.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] Tha an làraidh seo dìreach air tighinn bhon Rubha, loma-làn le na bha anns na bionaichean gorm ‘s uaine. an ath cheum dhan stuth nuair a ruigeas e an t-ionad seo?

[Dòmhnall MacÌomhair] Uill tha an stuth tha seo a’ tighinn a-steach, seo an stuth a bhios sinn ag ath-chuairteachadh agus tha sinn ga chur tron phicking station tha seo agus bidh daoine ag obair air a’ phicking station agus bidh iad a’ sortadh a-mach an stuth a tha seo. ‘S bidh plastaig a’ tighinn a-mach, chì sibh gu bheil plastaig air a chumail eadar-dhealaichte bhon phàipear ‘s bidh sinn an uair sin ga chur tron veilear tha seo agus bidh e ga chur air falbh chun a’ mhainland.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] Tha stuth organach a’ tighinn an seo cuideachd. Thathas a’ dèanamh todhar dhe cuid dhen stuth ach cuideachd tha an gas a tha tighinn bhuaithe ga chleachdadh airson dealan a chruthachadh.

[Dòmhnall MacÌomhair] ‘S tha sinn ga phrosaigeadh a-steach an seo tron an digester againn agus bidh sinn a’ dèanamh compost a-mach às an sin agus tha sinn cuideachadh a’ cruthachadh tòrr dealain a-mach às an sin cuideachd. Bidh einnsean gas againn a’ dol nuair a bhios gas a’ tighinn bhon phròiseas tha sin.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] Ged a tha an uimhir de stuth fhathast ga ath-chruthachadh aig an ionad a’ sìor fhàs naoi bliadhna bhon a dh’ fhosgail e, thathas ag iarraidh air barrachd dhaoine a bhith ag ath-chuairteachadh.

Tha daoine ann fhathast nach eil a’ bodraigeadh agus sin a tha sinn a’ feuchainn ri dhèanamh, ‘s e bhith ag obair còmhla ri na daoine sin, ag innse dhaibh cho furasta ‘s a tha an suidheachadh dhaibh agus cuideachd ma tha càil sam bith ann as urrainn dhuinn, sinn fhìn a dhèanamh a chuideachadh.

[Ruairidh Rothach – Neach-aithris] Ruairidh Rothach, BBC An Là, Ionad Ath-Chuairteachaidh a’ Ghrìde.

Creed Recycling Centre

[Angela Maclean – Presenter] They would like the people of the Western Isles to be more waste aware and recycle more. There’s been 10 years since the Creed Recycling Centre opened on the outskirts of Stornoway. They process a lot there but they say they could be doing more. They recycle various things from paper, plastic, glass and organic waste. Here’s Roddy Munro.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] Do you ever wonder what happens to the waste that goes into the green, grey and blue bins? Well in Lewis and Harris most of it comes here to the Creed Recycling Centre to be put to use again. I was invited to go and see how things work there.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] This lorry has just arrived from Point, completely full of refuge from the blue and green bins. What next for the waste once it reaches this centre?

[Donald MacIver] Well the waste comes in, this is what we recycle and we put it through this picking station where people sort through it. The plastic comes out, you’ll see that plastic is sorted from the paper and we then out it through this veiler and it gets sent to the mainland.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] Organic waste comes here too. They make fertiliser out of most of it and also the gas it produces is used to create power.

[Donald MacIver] We process it in through our digester and we make compost out of it and that also in turn creates a lot of power. Our gas engine is powered by that process.

[Roddy Munro – Reporter] Although the amount getting recycled keeps increasing nine years after it opened, they want more people to recycle.

[Iain Campbell] The stuff we get in is much better than it used to be. Also it’s now easier for people to recycle with the bins they have at their homes and also the recycling banks we have. There are people who still don’t bother and we are trying to work with these people to let them know how easy it is and also to provide support.
