150 bliadhna den Chomann Sgitheanach

[Anne Lundon – Preseantair] Nise, chaidh cuirm mhòr a chumail aig Comhairle Ghlaschu a-raoir a’ comharrachadh 150 bliadhna de Chomann Sgitheanach a’ bhaile. Chaidh an comann a stèidheachadh son Sgitheanaich a bha air tighinn dhan bhaile mhòr a chuideachadh agus àite a thoirt dhaibh far am faodadh iad cruinneachadh. Ach a-nis tha dùbhlan ùr romhpa daoine òga a thàladh son a chumail a' dol. Seo Iain MacDiarmaid.

[Iain MacDiarmaid – Neach-aithris] Coigrich a’ feuchainn ris an t-slighe a dhèanamh ann an Glaschu. Taobh eile Cheàrnag Sheòrais bha dìnnear shònraichte ann son Comann a chaidh a stèidheachadh airson an dearbh chuideachadh sin a thoirt seachad. Comann Sgitheanach Ghlaschu.

[Calum Ross] Thòisich e an toiseach airson Sgitheanaich a chumail còmhla agus Sgitheanaich a bha ann an Glaschu. Chan e an Glaschu a th’ ann an-diugh a bh’ann an uair sin idir, bha feadhainn nach fhaigheadh obair ‘s nach robh lorg obair ‘s bha an comann a’ cuideachadh daoine le airgead nam biodh feum air airgead agus gan cuideachadh a’ lorg obair cuideachd.

[Iain MacDiarmaid – Neach-aithris] Chaidh a stèidheachadh o chionn 150 bliadhna an-dè. Mar thoireadh air sin fhuair urrasairean a’ Chomainn agus Sgitheanaich th’ air a bhith an sàs ann, cuireadh gu dìnnear leis a’ phròbhaist ann an toglaichean spaideil na comhairle.

[Ceiteag NicDhòmhnaill] Tha mi air leth pròiseil smaoineachadh gu bheil na bliadhnaichean seo ann bhon thòisich an comann.

[Iain MacDiarmaid – Neach-aithris] Agus a bheil feum annta?

[Ceiteag NicDhòmhnaill] Oh tha mi smaoineachadh gu bheil mòran feum annta.

[Iain MacDiarmaid – Neach-aithris] Ann an 150 bliadhna, tha obair a’ chomainn air atharrachadh. Ach tha na h-aon bhunaitean ann - taic a thoirt do Sgitheanaich.

[Calum Ross] Bidh feadhainn ann an seo, bha bodach agus cailleach nach d’ fhuair dhachaigh dhan eilean o chionn bliadhna no dhà bha sinne comasach air beagan airgid a thoirt dhaibh son an tiogaid aca a phàigheadh sa h-uile càil ‘s faighinn dhachaigh aon uair eile.

[Iain MacDiarmaid – Neach-aithris] Tha dùbhlan ann òigridh a thàladh ach tha an Comann Sgitheanach a’ dèanamh nas fheàrr na tha cuid eile.

[Eilidh NicCarmaig] Nuair a bhios tu tighinn a Ghlaschu ‘s chan eil thu eòlach air duine sam bith tha e math daoine às an eilean agad fhèin a bhith còmhla riut agus tha iad coltach ri teaghlach eile tha iad cho càirdeil ‘s tha iad cho laghach.

[Iain MacDiarmaid – Neach-aithris] ‘S e an càirdeas sin a chùm a’ dol iad 150 bliadhna agus ‘s e sin a bhios a dhìth ma tha 150 eile gu bhith aca. Iain MacDiarmaid, BBC An Là, Glaschu.

150 years of the Glasgow Skye Association

[Anne Lundon – Presenter] A large event was held at the City Chambers in Glasgow last night to celebrate 150 years of the city’s Glasgow Skye Association. The association was set up to help people from Skye who had come to the city by offering a place to bring them together. They now face a new challenge of attracting younger people in order to continue. Here’s John McDiarmid.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] Strangers trying to find their way around Glasgow. On the other side of George Square a special dinner was being held for an association that was set up to help in the very same way. The Glasgow Skye Association.

[Calum Ross] It initially began to bring people from Skye together, those who were in Glasgow. Glasgow how we know it today isn’t how it was then, there were some that couldn’t find work and the association helped people with money if they needed it and helped them find jobs too.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] It was set up 150 years ago yesterday. In recognition of this, the association’s trustees and people from Skye who were involved in it received an invite to dinner with the Lord Provost in the grand council buildings.

[Katie Macdonald] I’m extremely proud to think it’s been that long since the association began.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] And are they beneficial?

[Katie Macdonald] Oh I think they are very beneficial indeed.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] In 150 years the work of the association has changed. But it has the same fundamentals – to provide assistance to people from Skye.

[Calum Ross] There’s some people here, there was old man and lady that hadn’t been able to get back home to the island for a few years and we were able to give them some money to pay for their ticket and everything to allow them to get home one more time.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] There’s a challenge attracting young people but the Glasgow Skye Association does better than most others.

[Eilidh Cormack] When you come to Glasgow and you don’t know anybody it’s good to be with people from your own island and they are like a second family, they are so nice and friendly.

[John McDiarmid – Reporter] It’s this friendship that kept them going for 150 years and that’s what will be needed if they are to go on for another 150 years. Iain McDiarmid, BBC An Là, Glasgow.
