Visitor centre at Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve open again

[Innes Munro – Presenter] The visitor centre at the Beinn Eighe National Reserve will open again on Sunday. Hundreds of thousands of pounds were spent renovating the centre and its surroundings. Amongst the new facilities there’s a sheltered area for wildlife and information panels about the area’s Gaelic heritage. Calum Maclean went to have a look at it.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] The Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve takes in 48 cm₂ from the top of the hill down to Loch Maree. With funding of more than £300,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, Scottish National Heritage have put in place new facilities.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] They estimate that around 15,000 visitors come to the Beinn Eighe Visitor Centre each year and they hope with the new facilities they have that people will gain a better understanding of the place and as part of that, of the Gaelic place names of the area.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] In addition to that number, there are around 50,000 visiting the National Nature Reserve each year. Inside the building, there are new information boards explaining the names of the hills in Gaelic and English.

[Robyn Ireland] We really want both people in the area itself and those from further afield to spend time in these areas in order to learn more about the area, about the natural heritage of the area and that they will enjoy their time.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] In the centre there’s also information boards with the history and scenery in the area. The National Nature Reserve is home to protected animals such as red stags and eagles. As part of the new exhibition, visitors can get a chance to see a live video from an eagles nest and if they’re lucky, other sights of wildlife that live in the reserve.

[Robyn Ireland] If they are very lucky there’s a chance for them to see wildcats but in general there’s a chance to see sea eagles, golden eagles and buzzards.

[Calum Maclean – Reporter] The new centre will open to the public on Sunday and it’s open through to October. Calum Maclean, BBC An Là, Beinn Eighe.
