Tha meanglan an fhoghair fhathast daithteach is àlainn

[Iain MacIlleathain – Preseantair] Nise, chaidh na clocan air ais agus tha na h-oidhcheannan a’ sìor tharraing dlùth ach tha meanglan an fhoghair fhathast daithteach agus àlainn an gnùis. Tha iad nas àille am-bliadhna, nan dathan agus doimhneachd nam blàth. Am beachd cuid, tha e coltach, agus samhradh cho fada, ‘s cho blàth. ‘S ann an t-seachdain-sa is àille. ‘S fhuair Seonaidh MacCoinnich a shùil riutha gu h-àird.

Carson?

[Emily Edwards] Tha chlorophyll anns na duilleagan, agus ‘s e sin a tha gam fàgail uaine. Aig an àm seo dhen bhliadhna, tha sin air a bhriseadh sìos agus tha e a’ leigeil air rud eile tighinn tro na duilleagan. ‘S e sin carotene, a’ chiad rud. Tha sin a’ fàgail nan duilleagan car buidhe agus cuideachd tha rud eile anthocyanin an t-ainm a th’ air. Tha sin ag adhbhrachadh nan dathan dearga. Agus am-bliadhna, bha e gu math fuar as t-earrach agus an uair sin, bha samhradh agus foghar gu math blàth, tioram ann. Agus ‘s e sin a tha a’ fàgail ìrean nas àirde nan àbhaist den stuth a tha seo, anthocyanin agus ‘s ann airson sin a tha na dathan cho dearg ‘s cho làidir is cho brèagha am-bliadhna.

[Seonaidh MacCoinnich – Neach-aithris] bhliadhna air ais, rinn stoirm sa Chèitean milleadh air dathan nan duilleagan air an taobh siar, gam fàgail donn tron t-samhradh. Bha beagan iomagain gun toireadh seo droch bhuaidh air na h-eòin, a neadachadh agus am biathachadh sna craobhan. Cha chuir na duilleagan na dathan aca air ais an ath bhliadhna. Leis an samhradh a’ maireachdainn gu math nas fhaide am-bliadhna. a’ bhuaidh a tha sin a’ toirt air beathaichean san fharsaingeachd?

[Emily Edwards] ‘S tha sin a’ ciallachadh gu bheil na lusan anns na craobhan is mar sin air a bhith a’ fàs nas anmoiche sa bhliadhna. Is san fharsaingeachd, ‘s e deagh rud a tha sin do bheathaichean air sgàth ‘s gu bheil barrachd bìdh ri fhaighinn dhaibh. Tha e gu h-àraidh math dha beathaichean a tha ri cadal a’ gheamhraidh. Is tha iad sin feumach air stòrasan bìdh, is tha iad a’ dol a dhèanamh a’ gheamhraidh beagan nas fhasa dhaibh.

[Seonaidh MacCoinnich – Neach-aithris] A rèir eòlaichean, ’s e seo an t-seachdain as fheàrr airson na dathan fhaicinn mus tig an t-side fhuar ceart. Feuch gun gabh sibh cothrom a dhol a-mach agus sùil a thoirt air na seallaidhean àlainn. Seonaidh MacCoinnich, BBC An Là, fliuch ach toilichte ann an Inbhir Nis.

The autumn branches are still colourful and lovely

[Iain MacLean – Presenter] Now the clocks went back and the nights are drawing close, but the boughs of Autumn are still colourful and beautiful of face. They are more beautiful this year, the colours and the depth of colour. The view of many, it would appear, and with such a long summer and so warm, It is this week that they will be most beautiful. Seonaidh MacKenzie cast an eye on them.

[Seonaidh MacKenzie – Reporter] At this time of year, the days get shorter, the weather should get colder and there is only eight weeks until Christmas time. For the trees, the leaves are changing too, it puts a splash of colour on the branches. But this year, the colours are stronger, deeper than they were for many years. Why?

[Emily Edwards] there is chlorophyll in the leaves and that is what leaves them green. At this time of the year, this breaks down and it leaves two things coming through the leaves. Carotene is the first thing. This leaves the leaves a bit yellow and also there is another thing, anthocyanin is its name. This causes the red colours. And this year, it was very cold in the spring and then, there was a warm, dry summer and winter. And this leaves the levels higher than normal of this stuff, anthocyanin, and that is why the colours are so red and strong and so bright this year.

[Seonaidh MacKenzie – Reporter] Two years ago, a storm in May destroyed the colours of the leaves on the west side, leaving them brown in the summer. There was a wee bit of concern that this would have a bad effect on the birds, their nesting and feeding in the trees. The leaves will hold back their colours this year. With the summer lasting longer this year. What is the impact this has on animals in general?

[Emily Edwards] And this means that vegetation in the trees and such like is present later in the year. And in general, it’s a good thing for animals as there is more food for them. It is especially good for beasts who are sleeping in the winter. And they need food stores, and it will make winter a bit easier for them.

[Seonaidh MacKenzie – Reporter] According to experts, this is the best week to see the colours before the true cold weather comes. Try and take the opportunity to go out and cast an eye of the beautiful sights. Seonaidh MacKenzie. BBC An Là,, wet, but happy in Inverness.
