Ostail a' fosgladh as ùr ann am Baile nan Gearannan

[Angela NicIlleathain - Preseantair] Tha cuirm a’ dol ann am Baile nan Gearannan air taobh siar Leòdhais a-nochd, a’ comharrachadh gu bheil ostail, a dhùin ann, air ath-nuadhachadh. ‘s iad Urras Gatliffe a bha a’ ruith an ostail, ach tha Urras nan Gearranan air an uallach a ghabhail os làimh. Leis a’ ghoireas a’ fosgladh as ùr, tha dòchas ann gun tèid barrachd luchd-turais a thàladh dhan bhaile. Seo Aonghas Dòmhnallach.

[Aonghas Dòmhnallach – Neach-aithris] Tha muinntir Chàrlabhaigh gu math eirmseach a’ toirt aiseirigh air Baile nan taighean-dubha anns na Gearannan. Nam measg, tha togalach a tha air a bhith fo chùram Urras Ghatliffe mar ostail bho chionn còrr is fichead bliadhna agus tha e air cobhair a dhèanamh air iomadach truaghan ann an teant air na rinn an t-uisge no a’ mheanbh-chuileag a’ chùis.

[Iain MacArtair] ‘S e seo a’ chiad taigh a chaidh a dhèanamh an àirde ann am Baile nan Gearranan, taighean-dubha nan Gearranan co-dhiù. Agus chaidh a dhèanamh an àirde ann an naoi ceud deug nochad ‘s a h-aon. Agus aig an àm sin, cha robh Urras nan Gearranan, cha robh sinn buileach deiseil airson a ruith mar gum biodh, airson a’ gabhail a-nall, cha robh sinn aig an ìre far am b’ urrainn dhuinn sin a dhèanamh. Agus chaidh e thoirt air mhàl dha Urras Ghatliffe airson a ruith mar ostail.

[Aonghas Dòmhnallach – Neach-aithris] Bha an t-Urramach Calum Iain MacLeòid na fhear-ceàird ag obair air na taighean-dubha nuair a chaidh an dèanamh an-àirde. Tha e freagarrach a-nise g ‘eil e a’ comharrachadh a’ phiseach a tha Urras nan Gearannan air a dhèanamh.

[Iain MacArtair] Dìreach gu bliadhna am foghar sa chaidh, bha Urras Ghatliffe ga ruith mar Ostail agus seach gun robh sinne a’ faireachdainn gum b’ urrainn dhuinn a-nis a ruith is a gabhail a-nall is gum biodh e, ‘s dòcha, na b’ fheàrr a bhith againne fhìn. Ghabh sinn a-nall e agus chaidh a dhèanamh an-àirde dìreach anns na mìosan mu dheireadh ‘s a tha sinn a-nis glè fhaisg gu bhith deiseil airson fhosgladh.

[Aonghas Dòmhnallach – Neach-aithris] Ach, a bheil e idir na bhriseadh-dùil do luchd-turais nach eil na h-aon ghoireasan ‘s a bha san t-seann taighean-dubha aca san ostail?

[Iain MacArtair] Uill, tha mi an dòchas nach eil! Ach chanainn-sa gum biodh iad, ‘s dòcha, beagan nas cofhurtail an seo nam bhiodh iad ann an taigh-dubh. Tha a h-uile cofhurtachd aca an seo, tha blàth ‘s tha a h-uile goireas aca.

[Aonghas Dòmhnallach – Neach-aithris] Agus chan eil iad gu bhith feitheamh fada mus fheuch iad ri daoine fhaighinn a-steach.

[Iain MacArtair] Le beagan sanasachd, tha sinn an dòchas gun tòisich luchd-turais a’ tighinn a lorg àiteachean den t-seòrsa. Tha e gu math saor a bhith a’ fuireach ann. Agus tha fhios againne gu bheil margaid ann airson àite den t-seòrsa. Agus bidh sinn an dòchas dìreach tòiseachadh an t-seachain sa tighinn, cho luath ‘s a ghabhas, air fhosgladh dha luchd-turais.

[Aonghas Dòmhnallach – Neach-aithris] Ceum ùrachaidh eile dha na taighean-dubha agus dòchas math gu soirbhich e. Aonghas Dòmhnallach. BBC An Là, anns na Gearranan.

Hostel opens as new in Garenin

[Angela MacLean - Presenter] There is a concert happening in Garenin on west side of Lewis, to celebrate the hostel, that was closed, which has been renovated. The Gatliffe Trust did run the hostel, but it is the Garenin Trust that have taken the responsibility upon themselves. With the resource opening as new, there is hope that more tourists will be attracted to the town. Here’s Angus McDonald.

[Angus MacDonald – Reporter] The people of Carloway are pleased to resurrect the town blackhouses in Garenin. Amongst them, there is a building that has been under the care of the Gatliffe as a hostel for more than 20 years and it has taken care of many a poor soul who has been in a tent that has let in water, or midges.

[Iain MacArthur] This is the first house that was built in Garenin, of the Garenin blackhouses anyway. And it was built in 1991. And at that time, The Garenin Trust, we were not ready to run it, as it were, to take it on, we were not at the stage where we could do that. And it went out to rent to the Gatliffe Trust to run as a hostel.

[Angus MacDonald – Reporter] The Reverend Calum Iain MacLeod was the first employee to work on the blackhouses when they were being built. It is fitting now that he is celebrating the improvement that the Garenin Trust have done.

[Iain MacArthur] Up to Autumn last year, The Gatliffe Trust was run as an hostel and as we were feeling that we could run it a, maybe, it would be better, as it were, if we had it ourselves. We took it on and did it up, just in the last months and we are now really close to finish for opening.

[Angus MacDonald – Reporter] But, is it a disappointment to tourists that there are not the same resources in the hostel that were in the blackhouses?

[Iain MacArthur] Well, I hope that they won’t! But, I would say that, maybe, they would be more comfortable here than if they were in a blackhouse. There is every comfort here; there is warmth and every resource here for them.

[Angus MacDonald – Reporter] And they are not going to wait long before trying to get people in.

[Iain MacArtair] With a little advertising, we hope that tourists will start to come and find places of this sort. It is very cheap to stay here. And we know that there is a market for places of this type. And we hope that at the start of this coming week, as soon as possible, to open for tourists.

[Angus MacDonald – Reporter] A new step for the blackhouses and there is hope it is a success. Angus MacDonald, BBC An Là, Garenin.
