Am feum a th’ ann a bhith a’ dol air baidhsagal

[Iain MacIlleathain - Preseantair] Nise, ceist; am feum a th’ ann a bhith a’ dol air baidhsagal? Ceist shìmplidh gu leòr, shaoileadh sibh, ‘s dòcha ach tha i ga cnuasachadh aig co-labhairt ann an Glaschu. Rinn Ionad Slàinte Phoblaich a’ bhaile sgrùdadh a tha a’ sealltainn gu bheil na milleanan ga sàbhaladh ann am buidseat na slàinte le na tha de dhaoine dèanamh air a’ bhaile agus mach a-rithist air baidhsagal. Seo Iain MacDiarmid.

[Iain MacDiarmid - Neach-aithris] Tha a bhith a’ dol air baidhsagal seach sa chàr math dhut. Ach a-nis, tha Ionad Slàinte Phoblach Ghlaschu air sùim airgid a chur ris an fheum a tha e a’ dèanamh dhan bhaile. Le bhith cleachdadh tomhas Bhuidheann Slàinte na Cruinne, tha iad a’ dèanamh dheth gu bheil an fheadhainn air chuibhle a’ cruthachadh sàbhalaidhean ann an cosgaidhean slàinte de cheithir millean not sa bhliadhna.

[Bruce Whyte] Tha modail dìreach a’ gabhail a-steach ìre de bhàsan ceangailte ri gun a bhith air rothair. Dh’fhaodadh a bhith nam biodh e a’ gabhail a-steach, can, na seòrsa tinneasan no bochdainn a tha air an seachnadh le rothaireachd, dh’ fhaodadh a’ bhuaidh a bhith beagan nas motha.

[Iain MacDiarmid - Neach-aithris] A rèir na buidhne a tha ag obair le buidhnean slàinte agus poblach eile gus piseach a thoirt air fallaineachd mhuinntir Ghlaschu, tha na tha a’ dol air baidhsagal mar dhòigh-siubhail air àrdachadh còig air fhichead às a’ cheud thar na ceithir bliadhna mu dheireadh. Ach, son buannachd dha-rìribh fhaicinn tha feum air leasachadh

[Bruce Whyte] Chanainn-sa gum biodh a h-uile duine a tha air rothair ann an Glaschu ag ràdh gum bu chòir barrachd slighean-rothaireachd a bhith ann agus tha slighe ùr an seo gu math spaideil ach feumaidh sinn fada a bharrachd timcheall air Ghlaschu air fad.

[Iain MacDiarmid - Neach-aithris] ‘S e modail bailtean leithid Gothenburg san t-Suain a thathas a’ moladh a leantainn, far a bheil goireasan a’ ciallachadh gu bheil aon slighe às gach deich ga dhèanamh air baidhsagal. Iain MacDiarmid, BBC An Là, Glaschu.

The benefits of going by bike

[Iain MacLean - Presenter] Now a question; what’s the use of going on a bicycle? A simple question right enough, you would think, maybe but it has been pondered at a conference in Glasgow. The city’s Centre for Population Health did a study which showed that millions were being saved in the health budget with people going to the town and out again on abicycle. Here’s Iain MacDiarmid.

[Iain MacDiarmid - Reporter] Going on a bicycle instead of a car is good for you. But now, the Glasgow Centre for Population Health has put a financial sum on the good that it has done to the city. With using a measure from the World Health Organization, they make out that those on two wheels are making savings in health costs of four million pounds each year.

[Bruce Whyte] The model just takes in the death rate linked with not using a bicycle. It could be, if it took in, say, the sort of illnesses, or ill-health which are avoided by cycling, the impact could be a wee bit bigger.

[Iain MacDiarmid - Reporter] According to the group who are working with another health and population group to make improvements on the health for the people of Glasgow, those who go on a bicycle as their way of travel has increased by 25% in the last four years. But to see a true benefit, there needs to be development.

[Bruce Whyte] I would say that everyone who is on a bicycle in Glasgow would say that there should be more cycle paths and this new cycle path here is really smart but there must be many more around the whole of Glasgow.

[Iain MacDiarmid - Reporter] It’s the model of towns like Gothenburg in Sweden that is being recommended to follow, where facilities mean that one out of every ten routes can be done on a bicycle. Iain MacDiarmid, BBC An Là, Glasgow.
