Obair Naomi Mhitchison a chomharrachadh ann an Carradal

[Iain MacAonghais - Preseantair] Nise, chaidh obair na bana-sgrìobhaiche Naomi Mhitchison a chomharrachadh aig tachartas ann an Carradal ann an Cinn Tìre aig an deireadh-sheachdain. Bha i gu mòr a’ strì airson ceartas sòisealta agus còireachan bhoireannach. Chaidh taisbeanadh fhoillseachadh aig an tachartas cuideachd ‘s thathar am beachd a thoirt timcheall sgìre Earra-Ghàidheil, bha Andrea Wolff an-làthair.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Thàinig sluagh mòr gu baile beag Charradal air taobh sear Chinn Tìre air an deireadh-sheachdain. Bhathar a’ comharrachadh seachdad ‘s a còig bliadhna bhon a cheannaich an sgrìobhaiche Naomi Mhitchison an taigh mòr sa bhaile. Bha i cuideachd ag obair airson ceartas sòisealta agus bha i an-sàs gus talla a’ bhaile a thogail. Is coltach gun robh muinntir an àite agus an teaghlach aice gu math measail oirre.

[Neil Mitchison] Bha ise mar Charraig nan Àl mar a chanas iad, cha robh i ag atharrachadh idir. Bha i làn bheatha, làn bheachdan, uabhasach math air èisteachd, uabhasach math air. Bhiodh i uaireannan a’ faighinn faisg air daoine, mar a thuirt mi a-nochd, falbh còmhla rithe air turas trèan agus mus ruigeadh an trèan an ceann thall, ‘s ann a bhiodh tu air eachdraidh-beatha fhaighinn bho dhithis eile sa carraidse còmhla riut a h-uile teans gum biodh e an bheatha sin a’ nochdadh ann an leabhar aice-se an ath bhliadhna, no a’ bhliadhna às dèidh sin.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Chaidh an taisbeanadh a chur ri chèile mu bheatha agus obair Naomi. Ged a bha cuid de na beachdan aice adhartach, tha e coltach gun robh i cuideachd measail air traidisean.

[Naomi Mitchison] Bha rudan ann mu dheidhinn beatha anns an taigh a bha uabhasach traidiseanta, can, dìnnear mòr far nach robh a’ chlann no coin ann, ach aig an aon àm, bha i uabhasach fosgailte, bhiodh daoine a’ tighinn a-steach fad na h-ùine, bhiodh rudan a’ dol le ise a’ dèanamh barbeques agus a’ dol a-mach air chuairt agus b’ aithne dhith a h-uile duine anns a’ bhaile agus b’ aithne dhaibhsan ise cuideachd. Anns an dòigh sin, bha i uabhasach fosgailte.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Chaidh bàrdachd a sgrìobh Naomi a chur air an àrd-ùrlar air an oidhche.

[Pamela Gilbraith] We could learn a lot about the things she wrote a long time ago, which actually face us now about Carradale is actually a declining population, an elderly population. Our young people are going, just as she said, in some of the novels. She warned us this would happen if we didn’t look to our industry, manufacturing things becoming more sustainable, so you know, I think she was well ahead of her time and we should listen to her now and read her literature.

[Andreas Wolff – Neach-aithris] Bidh an taisbeanadh ri fhaicinn sa bhaile fad seachdain mus tèid e air chuairt tro Earra-Ghàidheal agus Alba air fad. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là, Carradal.

The work of Naomi Mitchison is celebrated in Carradale

[Iain MacInnes - Presenter] Now, the work of the writer, Naomi Mitchison was celebrated at an event in Carradale in Kintyre at the weekend. She struggled for social justice and women’s rights. An exhibition was launched at the event too and it will travel around Argyll, Andreas Wollf was there.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] A large population came to the small town of Carradale on the west side of Kintyre. It was to celebrate the seventy-five years since the writer Naomi Mitchison bought the big house in the town. She also worked for social justice and she was involved in building the town hall. It seems that the people of the area and her family were very keen on her.

[Neil Mitchison] She was like a Rock of Ages, as they say, she never changed. She was full of life, full of ideas, really good at listening, really good at it. She would sometimes get close to people, as I said tonight, away with her on a train trip and before the train arrived at its destination you would have an autobiography of two lives and this would appear in a book of hers, the next year, or the year after that.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] The exhibition was put together about the life and work of Naomi. Although many of her ideas were forward-thinking, it seems she was very keen on tradition.

[Naomi Mitchison] There were things about life in the house that were really traditional, say, a big dinner where children and dogs were not present, but at the same time, she was really open, people would come in all the time, things would be happening with her doing barbeques and going out and about and she knew everyone and everyone knew her too. In that way, she was very open.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] Poetry that Naomi wrote will appear on the stage tonight.

[Pamela Gilbraith] We could learn a lot about the things she wrote a long time ago, which actually face us now about Carradale is actually a declining population, an elderly population. Our young people are going, just as she said, in some of the novels. She warned us this would happen if we didn’t look to our industry, manufacturing things becoming more sustainable, so I, you know, think she was well ahead of her time and we should listen to her now and read her literature.

[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] The exhibition can be seen for a week before it goes on tour through Argyll and Scotland. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là, Carradale.
