Seirbheis eadar-theangachaidh ùr Ghàidhlig

Màiri Rodgers - Preseantair] Dh’fhaodadh airgead mòr a chaomhnadh le seirbheis eadar-theangachaidh ùr Ghàidhlig. Chaidh siostam TòMaS a chruthachadh le Oilthigh na Gàidhealtachd agus nan Eilean agus iad den bheachd gum faodadh an cànan atharrachadh gu mòr a rèir bha ag eadar-theangachadh. A-nis ged-tà, tha dòchas ann nach ann mar sin a bhios cùisean. Tha Eileen NicDhòmhnaill ag aithris.

[Eileen NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Mòrag NicIlleathain a’ cur an nobhail aig Mìcheal Morpugo sa Ghàidhlig aice fhèin. Le luchd-eadar-theangachaidh bho Leòdhas gu Lodainn, chan eil rian ann, ach gum bi eadar-dhealachadh ann an dòighean sgrìobhaidh. A-nise, tha dòchas ann nach tachair sin, ‘s e TòMaS, no Translation Memory Service an t-ainm a th’air – a’ chiad sheirbheis de sheòrsa anns a’ Ghàidhlig

[Ruairidh MacAoidh - OGE] Tha an seirbheis air-loidhne. Tha mi an dòchas gum faigh sinn eadar-theangairean is buidhnean poblach airson seo a chleachdadh – airson cinnt a dhèanamh nach eil sinn dìreach ag eadar-theangachadh an aon rud, bliadhna as dèidh bliadhna. Mar sin, tha dùil againn, gum b’urrainn dhuinn na seann eadar-theangaichean a chleachdadh a-rithist ‘s a-rithist.

[Eileen NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Tha an t-seirbheis ag obair san aon dòigh ‘s a tha fòn-làimhe. Cumaidh e na faclan agus na h-abairtean a tha luchd-eadar-theangachaidh a’ cleachdadh agus air a chleachdadh. Le sin, cuiridh e Gàidhlig air na h-abairtean a dh’aithnicheas e – rud a shàbhaileas tìde do luchd-eadar-theangachaidh.

[Mòrag NicIlleathain – Eadar-theangair] ‘S tha dùil agam a chleachdadh a-rithist airson rud a tha mi an ìmpis tòiseachadh air far am bi cnapan den aon rud anns na faidhlichean. Tha e freagarrach airson sin, ach aig an aon àm, tha mi a’ cur Gàidhlig air nobhail le Morpurgo agus cha chleachdainn e airson sin. Aig an ìre seo, cha bhiodh e freagarrach airson leithid sin.

[Eileen NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Chosg an goireas ùr deich air fhichead mìle not. Tha an fheadhainn air a chùlaibh ag ràdh ged-tà gum faodadh buidhnean poblach a dh’fheumas planaichean Gàidhlig a chur air dòigh airgead mòr a chaomhnadh. Ach a bheil sin a’ ciallachadh gur ann air an luchd-eadar-theangachaidh a dhùnadh an doras?

[Ruairidh MacAoidh - OGE] Bidh barrachd ùine aca airson barrachd obrach a dhèanamh. Le seo, air sgàth ‘s gum bi barrachd chompanaidhean a’ tighinn air bhòrd, tha sin a’ ciallachadh gum bi barrachd obrach ann agus mar a tha - a thaobh amasan nam planaichean Gàidhlig, tha feum aig na companaidhean poblach air barrachd fhoillseachan Gàidhlig a chur air dòigh. Mar sin tha dùil ann gum bi barrachd obrach ann gu sònraichte leis na buidhnean ùra a tha a’ tighinn air bòrd cuideachd.

A new Gaelic translation service

[Mairi Rodgers - Presenter] Large sums of money can be saved with a new Gaelic translation service. The system TòMaS was created by the University of the Highlands and Islands and they think language could to change drastically, depending on who was translating. Now, though, there is hope that things don’t have to be this way. Eileen MacDonald reports.

[Eileen MacDonald – Reporter] Morag MacLean is translating a novel by Mìcheal Morpugo into her own Gaelic. With translators from Lewis to Lothian, there is no standardisation, and there are differences in the ways of writing. Now, there is hope that this won’t happen. TòMaS, or Translation Memory Service, is its name, the first service of its kind in Gaelic.

[Ruairidh MacKay - UHI] The service is online. I hope that we will get translators and public bodies to use this – to make sure that we are not just translating tha same thing, year after year. For that reason, we expect we can use the same translations again. and again.

[Eileen MacDonald – Reporter] The service works in the same way as a mobile phone. It will keep the words and the phrases that the translators use. With that, it will put Gaelic on the phrases that it recognises – something that will save time for translators.

[Morag MacLean – Translator] I hope to use it again for something I am just about to start on where there will be bits of the same thing in the documents. It’s suitable for that, but at the same time, I am translating into Gaelic a novel by Michael Morpugo and I would not use it for that. At this stage, it would not be suitable for anything like that.

[Eileen MacDonald – Reporter] The new resource cost thirty thousand pounds. Those behind it say that public bodies, which need to set up Gaelic plans, could save lots of money. But does that mean that it’s on translators that the door will close?

[Ruairidh MacKay - UHI] They will have more time to do more work. With this, because more companies will come on board, tit will mean that that there will be more work and because of the aims of Gaelic plans, public bodies need to produce more Gaelic publications. Because of this, there us an expectation that there will be more work, especially for those new bodies who are also coming on board.

Bidh sinn a’ cur sgeulachdan bhon phrògram BBC An Là beò gach seachdain, le tar-sgrìobhadh Gàidhlig is eadar-theangachadh Beurla. Bidh dath an teacsa ag atharrachadh nuair a thèid facal a chluich. ‘S urrainnear cliogadh air facal sònraichte agus cluichidh am bhidio bhon sin a-mach. Dh’fhaodadh gum biodh seo cuideachail dha luchd-ionnsachaidh airson fuaimneachadh a dhearbhadh. Stories from the BBC ALBA Gaelic news programme "An Là" are uploaded on a weekly basis, with a Gaelic transcript and an English translation. As each Gaelic word is spoken, the accompanying text changes colour. Individual words can be selected with a simple click and the video will play from that point onwards. Learners may find this useful for checking pronunciation.

Bidh gach paragraf Gàidhlig a’ gluasad ri linn na h-aithris, ach faodar cuideachd na bàraichean-sgrolaidh a ghluasad gu earrann shònraichte den aithris. Each Gaelic paragraph automatically scrolls in conjunction with the news report, but the manual scrolling bars can also be used to move the text to a particular section of the report.

Chithear an tar-sgrìobhadh Gàidhlig anns a’ chiad dol a-mach. Ach, gheibhear eadar-theangachadh Beurla den tar-sgrìobhadh le bhith a’ taghadh Beurla no Gàidhlig agus Beurla. The Gaelic transcript is shown by default. However, you can see a translation of the transcript by selecting the English or Gaelic and English tabs.

Tha briathrachas cuideachd ri fhaotainn, le faidhlichean fuaim Gàidhlig na chois. Tha a’ bhriathrachas air a thaghadh bhon aithris fhèin, le measgachadh leithid ainmean-àite, briathrachas naidheachd, gnathasan-cainnt is abairtean. Key vocabulary is also provided, with accompanying Gaelic audio. This is a selected from the vocabulary contained in the news report and may include a selection of place names, news terminology, useful colloquialisms and phrases.

Tha luchd-leasachaidh an làraich a’ moladh gun tèid am brabhsair-lìn as ùire a chleachdadh airson an t-susbaint seo fhaicinn. Am measg nam brabhsairean ùra (saor an-asgaidh) as urrainnear a chleachdadh, tha Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer agus Safari. The developers of the site recommend that an up-to-date web browser is used to ensure the content displays to its optimum. Suitable browsers (which are free to use) include the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari.

Gheibhear an làraich seo air tablaidean is fònaichean-làimhe ach, a chionn ‘s gur e bhidiothan làn-sgrion a-mhàin a sheallas iPhone, bithear a’ cluich faidhle-fuaim seach bhidio. The site should work on mobile devices, but since iPhones will only show video full-screen and hide the transcript, we play an audio file instead of the video.
