Goireasan-cùraim anns na h-Eileanan Siar

[Iain MacIlleathain – Preseantair] Nise, air feadh na dùthcha, tha an àireamh de sheann daoine a tha feumach air cùram ag èirigh. Agus tha sin a’ cur cuideam a bharrachd air ospadalan agus dachaighean-cùraim. Anns na h-Eileanan an Iar, tha gainnead luchd-cùraim dachaigh air a bhith na thrioblaid dhan chomhairle agus tha iad a-nis air iomairt a chur air bonn feuch barrachd dhaoine a thàladh chun na seirbheis. Tha Alasdair Friseal ag aithris à Steòrnabhagh.

[Alasdair Friseal – Neach-aithris] Tha barrachd dhaoine anns an a th’ ann beò gu seann aois agus tha mòran dhiubh sin feumach air cùram ann an àrainneachd a tha sàbhailt’ agus fallain. Tha feumalachdan sònraichte cuideachd aig seann daoine ge bith meidigeach, no taic am broinn na dachaigh. Tha Comhairle nan Eilean Siar a-nis mothachail gu bheil feum air ro-innleachd shònraichte anns an sgìre airson dèiligeadh ri àrdachadh a bharrachd san àm ri teachd.

[Iain MacAmhlaidh – Comhairle nan Eilean Siar] Tha fhios againne gu bheil an àireamh de sheann daoine, a sìor dhol suas agus tha fhios againn g’eil sin romhainn airson iomadach bliadhna, agus mar sin tha sinn ag obair còmhla ri Bòrd na Slàinte agus ri buidhnean eile airson a bhith gar deisealachadh mar as fhèarr as urrainn dhuinn airson nan àireamhan mòra a bhios againne ri dèiligeadh ris anns na còig bliadhna fichead gu h-àraidh a tha romhainn.

[Alasdair Friseal – Neach-aithris] An-dràsta, tha duilgheadas ann luchd-obrach gu leòr fhastadh airson seirbheisean cùraim a thabhann anns a’ choimhearsnachd agus ann an dachaighean-cùraim ach mar fhuasgladh air an sin, tha ìmpidh ga chur air an òigridh anns an sgìre coimhead às dèidh nan ginealaichean a chaidh romhpa. Ach tha duilgheadas air a bhith aig àiteachan leithid nan Eileanan Siar grèim a chumail air tòrr den òigridh bho bhith a’ sireadh cothroman obrach agus foghlam air tìr-mòr.

[Iain MacAmhlaidh – Comhairle nan Eilean Siar] Tha sinn a-nis ann an còmhraidhean ris a’ cholaiste seo ann an Leòdhas agus ris na bùird slàinte agus gus am bi sinn a’ bruidhinn ris na sgoiltean agus gum bi sinn ag ràdh, “Seo agaibh cothroman dhuibh, cothroman dhuibh airson fantail sna h-eileanan, cothrom airson cùrsaichean a dhèanamh, cothrom airson obair mhaireannach a bhith agad fad do bheatha fhad ‘s a tha thu a’ fuireach anns na h-Eileanan Iar.”

[Alasdair Friseal – Neach-aithris] Tro na h-Eileanan, tha obair air a bhith a’ dol thar nam bliadhnaichean airson goireasan-cùraim do sheann daoine a leasachadh. Tha dachaigh ùr ann an Dalabrog a-nis a’ frithealadh air seann daoine ann an Uibhist à Deas agus tha dùil gun tòisich obair-togail a-rithist air taigh na Hearadh air an Tairbeart às dèidh dhan chompanaidh togail UBC a dhol fodha. Tha iad an dòchas gum freagair sin air feumalachdan seann daoine an-dràsta co-dhiù. Alasdair Friseal, BBC An Là, Steòrnabhagh.

Care facilities in the Western Isles

[Iain MacLean – Presenter] Now, all over the country, the number of old people who need care is on the rise. And that is putting extra pressure on hospitals and care homes. In the Western Isles, the shortage of care homes is a worry to the council and they have created an initiative to try and attract more people to the service. Alasdair Fraser reports from Stornoway.

[Alasdair Fraser – Reporter] More people in this day and age are in need of care in an environment that is safe and healthy. Older people have specialist needs whether they are medical, or need help within the home. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) are now aware that there is a need for an unique strategy in the area to deal with the extra increase in the future.

[Iain MacAulay – Comhairle nan Eilean Siar] We know that the number of elderly people is continuing to rise and we know that this will continue for many years and as such we are working with the health board and other groups to prepare ourselves as best we can for the large numbers that we will have to deal with, especially in the twenty five years that are ahead of us.

[Alasdair Fraser – Reporter] Now, there is trouble hiring enough people to offer care services in the community and in care homes, but as a solution to this, pressure is being put on the youth in the area to look after the generations that went before them. But, there has been trouble in places like the Western Isles keeping hold of lots of the young folk who have went to seek work opportunities and education on the mainland.

[Iain MacAulay – Comhairle nan Eilean Siar] We are now in talks with the college here in Lewis and the health board and we will be talking to the schools and we will say “Here are opportunities for you, opportunities for you to stay in the islands, an opportunity to do courses, an opportunity for permanent work that you will have all your life as long as you stay in the Western Isles”.

[Alasdair Fraser – Reporter] In the Islands, work has been going on through the years for care facilities. There is a new home in Dalabrog in South Uist and there is hope that building work will start on Harris in Tarbert after the company UBC went under. They hope that this will meet needs of the elderly just now. Alasdair Fraser, BBC An Là, Stornoway.
